Because the volunteered to work for their Country. They did not sign up to be slaves. |

Because volunteerism has different definitions. In the Militaries case its volunteer to join, meaning there is no draft so its not required that everyone has to serve in the military. Even though they get paid, they are not forced to join its their choice. |

Because you voluntarily provide your services for pay. Compare that to being forced to serve in the military, as is the norm in some places. I'm thankful that we aren't forced to join the military here, and you should be too. Of course, if they really need us, they will force us to join anyway. Good night! |

It probably has something to do with the fact that the people who are in the armed forces weren't "forced" to be there. They enlisted voluntarily. |

Not quite. A soldier volunteers to enlist into service. He is not conscripted by his government. They are paid so as to keep their service. Man can not live on good intentions! |

Because the Military does not force mandatory service so you volunteerily sign up.. It is still a job and you are still working, But you chose to sign up versus being forced to. Like people volunteerily go to school, they are not forced to, they chose to. You go to work everyday right? Are you forced or do you "volunteer" to go to work. Same idea. |

to use your example of A-Rod.
No one sent him a letter telling he needed to play major league baseball or he was going to jail.
Soldiers volunteer to enlist into the military with the understanding that they will be paid and receive benefits for their services.
If there were a draft, it would not be a "all-volunteer" as it is now. |

Using your logic, if A Rod had been drafted by the yankees, he would receive no pay. Think he would play well? |

you are volunteering your life, not the money. You always have a chance at becoming a hero. |

Because there is not draft. YET!!! |

It's a volunteer Army because no one is forced to join. You voluntarily enlist.
To use your example of A Rod "volunteer" to join a baseball team, you are correct, in essence. He didn't HAVE to join a particular team, but he did. Yes, he is being paid for it, the same as our military members. How would calling the Yankees a "volunteer" team be misleading? Did not all the players decide to play for that team? They could just have easily, and voluntarily, joined the Pirates, Braves, Padres, etc. They joined a team that meant the most to them, be that financially, location, or personal favorite. |

It is because there are no standing Mandantory Service Laws in play at the present time and the personnel within the military services are in the military by choice and not by conscription !!
The "pay" thing is just one of the enticements for people TO sign up voluntarily ---- then there's the "benefits packages" and "educational incentives" etc etc etc !!! |

Because they joined voluntarily—they weren't conscripted. |
