Why do we have naval bases in NV and TN?

The USA NAVY has a base in the desert of Nevada. And another in Tenn (a land locked states). Why?
I can understand that we need one in Ill to protect the Great Lakes in case Canada gets aggressive and decides to have a navel invastion, but Nevada????

The navy does more than just play with boats man. |

There are many more than that...many of them are training facilities, storage areas, research and development ect |

They are training facilities and support stations for naval aviators. Not all naval bases have to be by water or have ships. That's what naval docks are for. |

The air station at Fallon Nevada was built as a "fogfree" field. When carriers come back from the sea the aircraft on board those carriers fly to shore air stations. If the ones that were near the coast are fogged in, then the aircraft go to fields that are further inland, away from the coastal fog. In California that included El Centro, Lemoore, and Crow's Landing. Fallon is one of those fields in Nevada.
The Naval Air Station at Millington outside Memphis served the same purpose for the carrier returning to Pensacola.
Fallon is now the home of Fighter Town, the air training center made better known in the movie "Top Gun". It was moved from Miramar after the Marines took over that air station when El Toro closed.
During World War Two, and for some years after, we even had a Naval Air Station in Olathe Kansas. We had army air force fields throughout the country during that war to train pilots and air crews, as well as serve as fields where we could disperse aircraft as a preventive measure against air attack launched from off-shore.
At present there are three air activities that are providing the bulk of the protective air umbrella over the Great Lakes, in compliance with Operation Noble Eagle (defense of the homeland). They are located at Youngstown, Ohio; Selfridge Air National Guard Base near Detroit; and Niagara Falls Air Guard Base. The Naval Air Station at Glenview, Illinois closed in September of 1995. |

yea i dont think that they do and if they do they might be training facilities or naval bases for aircraft.
By the way call them aviators not pilots they will kick you *** if you call them pilots. |

The bases are both training bases. Its cheaper that using an aircraft carrier. Of the two, the one in Tenn. is for training enlisted men and women of both Navy and Marine Corp on aircraft maintence. I think the one in Neveda is for training in bombing missions. |

Training for Naval aviation. In Millington Tenn. The base was Nattc,Naval Aviation Technical training command. The base or bases in Nevada are for gunnery and bombing training.
The Tennessee command was just a good place to do this, Nevada is millions of acres of Kitty litter and highly unlikely to hurt anything was a stray bullet or missile. And I have heard that these Navy guys like to party a little in their off time, both places are suited for that, so I have heard. |

Because there are quite a few Navy men and women that might want to be in the reserves so they can still be in the military and also have a civilian life. |

Now that everyone has told you what they are, I will answer your actual question.
We have Naval bases in areas such as Nevada (Desert) and Tennessee because these bases are actually quite large and the cost of initial development and upkeep are alot less. If the mission does not actually have to do with the Ships, it can be moved inland. It is also safer from external attack. Weapons test facilities, bombing ranges and the like take thousands of acres that would not be available near coastal areas. NTC Orlando, (Landlocked in florida) before it closed down had radar and electronic training, nuclear power school and several others. NAS Memphis, aka Millington Naval Air Station, Tennessee has some flight training, ALOT of maintenance training, Command Staff School and a few other AIT (Advanced Courses).. Naval Weapon Station Fallon, Naval Weapons Station China Lake, and Naval Weapons Station (Cant remember name but in Penn.) all either develop, test, QASAS, Store, Maintain, Recondition Weapons. Used to be far enough that a sub would not be able to sneak in and blow up a whole weapons station from off shore.
Now the SHip related, Shipyards, Fueling, Weapons on/offloading, Immediate Use storage, Fleet Docking, Dive School, etc.. are all water based and just on the water.
Hope this helps |

They're generally logistical or support commands. Also satellite tracking commands. Not everything we do is on the water. lol |

It's called "Flight Training", the name of the base is Naval Air Station Fallon, Reno, NV. |

There are many shore stations throughout the country. Also there are military reserve centers in all states, usually multiple ones in each state. They are used for training local reserve personnel who attend classes and various training scenarios one weekend per month. During two weeks of the year the reservists are assigned to an active duty base or ship, usually where they would mobilize in the event of war or national emergency, or needs of the service. |

Can you spell PORK BARREL?
Four Score & God only knows how many years a ago, some congressman thought it would be neat to have a Naval Air station in his NV & TN district. Fallon & China lake are useful in that TOP Gun students can fly around all day & not bother anybody. Not sure what the TN Place does? Basically We have naval Facilites world wide. Some are rather far from the ocean.... |

These were invented by Al Gore during the Clinton administration in order to prepare for when global warming has caused the oceans to overflow, thus battleships will be able to dock in Tennessee and Nevada. |

the one in Nevada is a naval air base. I think top gun and the navy seals train there. The one in Tenn. is most likely a air base too. There is much more to the navy than ships and subs. They can go land, air and sea. In my opinion they are the best of the best. |

The base in Nevada is for Naval Aviation training; it has tens of thousands of acres of uninhabited dessert that's used for bombing ranges and the like. The base in Tennessee was originally established for Naval Aviation Training but eventually became a centralized logistics and personnel administration base. By the way, the base in Great Lakes is primarily for training of new recruits and is not to repel an attack from Canada - you ignorant troll. |
