Why do we need firms like Blacwater when we have the Diplomatic Security and Marine Embassy Guards ?

Diplomatic Security and Marine Embassy Guards are responsible for americans diplomats ans employees abroad. Hence why does the State Department hires private military firms ( Blackwater/Triple Canapoly ) ? Somebody enlighten me please.

Groups like Blackwater provides an opportunity for the US government to have a non-government agency do their dirty work without having the reprocussions of having the US military do it.
BTW, the US military IS a policing unit. In fact, a large majority of their operations are security in nature, such as US operations in the Balkans. |

Marines do NOT provide protection for diplomats. They are embassy security. The DSS provides protection for diplomats but are stretched extremely thin. Security contractors have ALWAYS been used to pick up the slack for DSS in places like Iraq. This isn't anything new. |

Because the military is not a policing unit, they are military. The military is only used to protect state employees not outside contractors. Firms like BlackWater are hired by the companies to protect their employees and property, something the military and Diplomatic Security cannot do as they are for state and federal personnel working in other countries. |

Because Diplomatic Security Agents are civil service employees.
Once hired, it is next to impossible to fire them ot lay them off when they are no longer needed.
So it is cheaper in the long run, to hire temporary contractors to augment the SDDSA than to hire several thousand new DSA's.
After next year, they really won't be needed in Iraq very much
So now they just cancel the contract.
But the US has always used some private security contractors to guard diplomats around the globe.
They even have them guarding US consulates.
The only reason Blackwater was turned into a scape goat,
Was because the owner and his family were long time contributors and supporters of the Republican Party.
You noticed, they never went after Triple Canopy the way they di Blackwater
And incidents per employee were higher for Triple C than they were for Blackwater.
Plus the number of security contractors is far lower than most people were lead to believe.
At max, there were 1500 working in Iraq for the US Government,
Not the 10's of thousands the media portrayed. |
