What I've heard is that trying to maintain their empire over us was too expensive for the British, combine that with some Britons having empathy for us and the support of the French, et al, and trying to hold onto the colonies was an expensive and growing unpopular proposition.

We won by changing the rules of war. The British fought using a tactic the Romans and Greeks used. They would walk in strait lines toward the enemy. Like one big wall, with an enormous amount of bravery they would walk into the enemy.

But instead of going at it with swards they engaged in cannon fire and muskets. When they got to close to fire or one ran out of ammo, they would charge into each other with swards to finish the fight.

America got there butts kicked by these tactics. George Washington himself sent out for the legendary mountain men we lived along side the Indians.

Now the Indians believed in different types of combat. They believed in ambushing, sneaking on the enemy and fighting and killing the higher ranking warriors. Something the British thought to be un professional. The Indians also believed in physiological warfare, decapitating or scalping the enemy. Some thing some of our men did in Vietnam.

The Americans who lived with the Indians took these battle strategies with them against the British along with the skills with there muskets.

The British simply couldn't keep up with the quick fierce engagements with the Americans. But still people just don't realize how close we were to loosing that war.

We used tactics that the British were not trained to cope with. Instead of marching to a feild and shooting til no one was left, we hid behind rocks and bushes. Plus we had a shorter logistics train and were fighting for our homes. And most of all, when they said they were pledging our homes lives and sacred honor, it wasn't just words. They meant what they said.

We didn't give up... and I believe France helped us when we showed our strength--not through weapons and such because America was a colony, not a military stronghold. Through perseverence, good battle tactics and some help, we won.

We won the Revolutionary War because we were fighting a guerilla style warfare and the English were staying in their nice little lines and formations. They didn't know how to fight back against guerilla warfare. That is exactly what happened to us in Vietnam and one of the reasons we lost because up until then we had also been fighting all of our wars in formations and lines.....look at WWI and WWII all dealing with trenches and lines advancing. It all changed with Vietnam. And up until the English fighting us, all wars had been fought with whole Armies clashing in the middle of some field.

Because the British tried to do exactlly what we are trying to do in Iraq. Didn't work for the British in 1776, and it isn't working for the US in 2006
