Why does America have such a huge military budget?

Because if it weren't us, the world would be run under tyranny and all there would be is poor people(except the politicians)...and it eventually probably will if we become weak...YOU'RE WELCOME!!! and btw, no country on earth has helped the poorer nations more than the United States...and look where THAT has gotten us..

The US are responsible for HALF of the defence spending in the world, they also have the biggest debt in the world, but, who's going to go shouting for their money back when the US have all the planes, tanks, Missile, warships....

They justify the spending by calling themselves the "Guardians of the free world" but I don't remember voting for that, do you?

Maybe they should take some of this massive defence budget and give their people free health care, get homeless people off the streets, and clean up their act - they are currently the world's worst polluters,
once they've done that they can stop interfering in cultures they have no concept of.

Nobody is out to get you, a small group of muslims flew planes into buildings and as a result of cracking that nut with your sledgehammer millions have suffered

We've been giving mountains of money to "poorer" nations for many decades, what's the result been?, most of them are still poor because they're incapable of keeping their populations in check and all you do is take one step forward and three back, or you end up with a China who's only concern is stealing you technology and defeating you, the people who helped the "poorer" nation.

Because all of the contractors who supply the military drive up costs with huge overruns.

Every time the armed forces need new planes, tanks, or anything, the contractors make it cost 10, 20, 100, or 1,000 times the original estimated cost.

The military constantly makes changes when some new item is contracted for, and this also drives up costs.

Noone ever does anything about the exhorbitant thievery going on, and Congress doesn't care about saving taxpayer money.

Congress just likes to tax and spend, tax and spend.

We also have a couple of wars going on, and also the "rebuilding" of Iraq. Haliburton alone has gotten more than one hundred billion dollars of taxpayers' money, thanks to Bush & Cheney. And again, Congress has done nothing about it.

Because the U.S. is the global hegemon, it stopped being a nation a long time ago. In time we will annex these other countries so that they may pay our felonious income taxes and elect our corrupt politicians.

When Obama gets done, the military budget might not be so huge, anymore

Before WWII we had a rather small military really only enough to for a cadre for new recruits if/when the need arouse. After WWII we saw the light. It is far better to take the war to our enemies and fight them on foreign soil. We need ships and planes to do this. We need trained crews for these planes and ships.

Furthermore we are at a point in history we can not fight a war like WWII again. We won't have time to build a military from nothing, but must have a standing military. Future wars are believed to be come as you are wars. No replacement not years to build new ships and equipment, but take what you have and go.

It was JFK how seen two ways of waging war appear in the 60's. The first and most horrific was Nuclear war. The second were low intensity conflicts like Afghanistan is now.

USA spends the most in the world in total dollars on the military spending, but come in at a dismal #46 by spending only $0.24 per $10 of GDP (a better measure, IMO). Imagine if they were spending like those guys in Oman who spend at $1.12 per $10 of GDP.

That huge military budget helps to protect most of the decent nations on Earth. I think it's worth it to keep North Korea, China, Iran, Iraq, etc. in check. The US government provides more foreign aid than the next half dozen countries combined. Private US citizens and groups provide more foreign aid than even the US government. Now if only your country gave as much.

I agree that we should curve our military spending down a few notches. I mean we have the most advanced air force and navy on earth. I think we can relax on the R&D for a while.

Because it's a paranoid nation? Because it likes to throw its weight around and it's abusive foreign policies over the last billion or so years have p!ssed near enough every other country off? Because it's a nation run by corporations hell-bent on acquiring the world's wealth at any cost and by any means? Or could it be because America is a wholey privately-owned country, and those owners want to keep it that way?
