Why does China need an army of 3 million soldiers?

China is geographically HUGE, its probably the biggest nation on Earth. And, given their population of 1 billion, that's not a very large percentage, is it?

The Vice President of China is there leading relief efforts. The president of China has pretty much suspended everything else to concentrate on aid and relief for the area.

Put another thing in perspective.
How many times has the USA been invaded in the last 200 years?

Put another thing in perspective. It is claimed in the west that China is expanding their military and technology for imperialistic reasons.
#1 China has not invaded a sovereign country since the last 70's, Vietnam when they were giving them a lot of problems on their southern boarder and after repeated warnings China went in, won the war and left one month to the day.
#2 China still has relics from the second world war still in use today. I have even heard they still have propeller driven fighter aircraft.
#3 They are going thru much needed modernization.

Finally:
China has made a pledge to the world they will not invade a sovereign country. They also have said they believe in a countries right of self determination. Obviously the USA does not hold such lofty ideals. They seem to understand that imperialism is a long term losing battle. That it is best to compete in the world market for resources, instead of taking it by force. China does not want more land, or to expand its reach.

There military has actually been cut back, and they have plans to further scale back there military as they devolop and buy more advanced weapons. There military used to be way bigger than it was. The reason if your tanks are not the best tanks in the world you will need more of them.

China's army is based around the old Soviet model. They don't have as much technology, so they make up for it with numbers: Hundreds of thousands of tanks, thousands of aircraft and millions of soldiers.

Also, as a Communist nation, the Central government is responsible for employing most (if not all) of the nation. It's easy to create jobs for the army.

Given that they are bordered by many nations who are less than friendly with them and have histories of aggretion, a large army would not be a bad idea.

The short answer is that communist governments need large armies in order to stay in power.

They want to show the world they have "arrived", so to speak, on the world stage. Getting the Olympics and having an amazingly fast growing economy are giving them pride in their country which has been so poor for so long. A big military serves to show the rest of the developed world that they are now an equal player, rather than a developing nation.

With a population of over a billion some people need to work and the army is as good as any.

To take over Asia and to be the next super power that is why. they depend on numbers rather than technology unlike us Americans who can do more with less soldiers and more tech.

Also, most of their army is conscripts, not volunteers.

They need a large army of soldiers to supplement their lack of technology. Since China is communist and heavily populated, this is easy for them. The communist soldiers are payed very poorly.
