QUOTE " FOREIGN MILITARY BASES
While a few other countries such as England, Russia, China, Italy and France have bases outside their territory, the United States is responsible for 95 per cent of foreign bases. According to US Government figures, the US military maintains 737 bases in 130 countries, although many estimate the true number to be over 1,000." UNQUOTE Additional Details Re Nightwind - "BIF also provided additional support for and has been linked in other ways to al Qaida and its operatives. First, BIF lent direct logistical support in 1998 to Mamdouh Mahmud Salim, a bin Laden lieutenant present at the founding of al Qaida. Salim has been indicted for conspiring to kill U.S. nationals. Testimony at the 2001 trial of United States v. Bin Laden, et al, implicated Salim in efforts to develop chemical weapons on behalf of al Qaida in the 1990s. As early as 1992, Salim and UBL made efforts to develop conventional weapons and to obtain nuclear weapons components. BIF was also linked to Mohamed Loay Bayazid, who was implicated in the U.S. embassy bombings trial for his efforts, approved by Salim, to obtain weapons components on behalf of UBL in 1993-1994. Bayazid's driver's license application, dated September 12, 1994, identified his address as the address of BIF's Illinois office. In the late 1990s, Saif al Islam el Masry, a member of ...

You can only arrive at that number if you call each Marine unit assigned to embassy protection duties (at embassies and consulates) a "military base."
And in the same regard, every other nation does the same thing. We got Russian soldiers in Washington DC for example.
Your anti-war bias has led you to dumb conclusions and even dumber websites. |

What would be the best way to defend a country? sitting at home and watch the enemy come at you? or would it be to know, see, and stop before they even get close?
ah, what would the world be like if the US didn't help out other countries, huh, what would the world be like if those other countries didn't ask for help??? |

A better question would be "WHY DO FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS ASK THE US TO HAVE BASES IN THEIR COUNTRIES?"
The US has bases overseas BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENTS IN THOSE COUNTRIES ASK US TO.
Why have a military when you can simply ask the US to protect you?
I am a citizen of the US, and personally I wish we would pull our troops out of ALL foreign countries and let you people rot.
Especially Europe........ |

They are there for your protection. Apparently you think you are special and don't need protection. Why don't you move to one of those countries without a US military base and see how you like it. Problem solved. |

We did not invade every country where there is a U.S. military presence. Some of those facilities are not permanent structures and our presence in temporary. Many nations around the world ask for assistance on projects, especially in central and south America. Plenty of nations need a small show of force in their country to show the dedication and commitment from our country to support their governments. How about the many thousands of people in Africa who need water and food, our presence has assisted them over the years. The U.N. as a whole has problems when it comes to military action for protection of people. Who would you call if you needed support and knew the U.N was a joke? |

To keep your sorry *** safe and provide the right for you to post rants like this!!!
h h makes a good point: latest U.S. base is now operational in Romania, the locals welcome them with open arms and thank them for the employment and investment.
Red 7: The U.N. does not and has never had a standing military force, when a situation occurs it looks for military resources from member nations, these member Nations have to post an order looking for volunteers to serve, no country can force its soldiers into the U.N. Peacekeeping missions, also the U.N. spends more time has a civilian run aid agency who employ unarmed personnel for aid distribution in areas of natural disaster and war. |

Ed, we did leave Saudi. Did this appease Osama, or any radical Muslim? No.
To answer the question: To ensure peace through a powerful presence. To ensure a first strike capability. To ensure adequate regional resources should it become unstable. Most importantly, to ensure you sleep safe and sound at night knowing the U.S. will never be invaded. |

Thats cool man, we'll leave, but than your country will lose hundreds of millions of dollars and not to mention the local economies that receive all the money from the soldiers spending habits. When you need help, don't call us. When your citizens are floating across the sea on a single wooden board to become a citizen, we'll turn them away. We should close our borders and lets see what happens. |

Paranoia and a national economy driven by military R and D.
Saulg21.... That's utter rubbish. The US contribution to disaster and emergency aid is lower percentage of GDP than other much smaller countries spend. Basically, it looks like a lot on paper, but it is tiny compared to the overall GDP of the US. |

Why do tey feel they need the basis, because when a terrorist strikes then they can respond faster since war isn't conventional of digging trenches they have to respond immediate. Yet all those countries hates the states plus Canada and they have the gull to complain about racism but they sure know where to go for help or when in need for food supplies. |

In case you haven't noticed,America has always been first to respond to natural disasters with aid and medical help. But speaking as an American I must admit Washington has always had the habit of sticking its thumbs into everybody's pie.
There are those in our political heirarchy who don't feel safe unless they can remain "The Power Behind The Throne" and dictate foreign policy . |

Well gee...aside from those that haven't spent any time serving thier country as much as they have served themselves, and the nut jobs claiming we are after world domination, the truth of the matter is that America has been the one country that has been a world wide peace keeper. Sure, I know we haven't done everything right, we've made our mistakes, but you point to any one other country that has been so benevolent ?
You can't perhaps look out today at America with all the flag burners, whiners about being in a war that was long long overdue, suedo nazi, communists, socialists....etc....but America use to stand for something pretty good and honorable. its been a debate whether or not we have lost our way since. We have given so many un-American types citizenship in the spirit of freedom that we lost our profound voice of clarity of what is right for the country and what we stand for.
But, in general, we have always sent support for wars. Albeit not all of them, people can quote the problems and conflicts in Africa which we didn't go since we didn't have a vested interest in. I imagine if Africa has some natural resource that we could benefit from, we would have gone there.
But the crass and twisted people in the country think we would have gone there to "pilliage" the resources. When has America ever done that ? If you can list any it would be a rarity if not a hoas. We go to try and liberate and rebuild nations so we will have an ally and friend in the region. Much like what we are trying to do in Iraq. And as our friend, yes, we will have an advantage of purchasing and procuring those resources.
To do what we do, on a world wide basis, we need bases all over the world. Maybe not as many as we would be taking over, but to us its a deal, the infrastructure in these places are already estabilished, Vise making a new base someplace else from scratch. |

Enough said about this question..! I only have one comment to make on the posted answers.
IT IS AMAZING HOW EFFECTIVE THE BRAIN-WASHING OF THE US GOVERNMENT ON ITS CITIZENS IS. I NOW REALIZE THAT THE AMERICANS REALLY DO THINK THAT THEY ARE CONSTANTLY UNDER THREAT BY FOREIGN NATIONS AND THIS IS WHY THEY JUSTIFY THEIR GOVERNMENTS UNJUSTIFIED WARS. AMAZING!!!!! |

Global presence.
Plus, since we routinely and historically(recent terms) have been saddled the responsibility of the "policemen" of the world, and have to take up the slack for countries like France, we need a place that's closer to the action. |

It's called protecting your freedom and rights to be able to post questions like this. 737 of those bases, now would you like to break it down for us, how many of those bases are like in Germany where the US is in as part of NATO at the invite of that country (after having defeated it in World War 2 it then turned to defend it from soviet aggression)?? take away all the bases in countries that a) are invited b) are not occupied by anyone else, such as Ascensions, Azores etc etc and how many actually are in a country where they should not be ???? do you want to answer that |

Because Americans actually believe that the entire world needs them.
They're like that overbearing type of person who always has an opinion, but can never accept that anyone else has an opinion of any worth. They always know what's best, or think they do...
....and if we won't do what they want when they ask nicely, then the back-up plan is to use force. They see everyone as the unruly child who simply needs discipline. And military might is the one tool that has never let the good old USofA down.
For decades Europe worried about the threat from the USSR, now we worry about the middle east, when really we should be worrying about our 'friends' across the pond. |
