Why does the US have aircraft carriers off the coast of Iran if it isn't hopeing for a war?

Because Iran is right net to Iraq is the main reason they are in the area. Show of force is another one.

If you would look at a map, you would not have had to ask this question. The closest body of water that a carrier can operate in is the Persian Gulf. Iraq does not have much coast line, Iran does. The ships have to be able to MOVE to launch and land planes so they really do not have much choice than to be "off the coast of Iran."

Because it's inbetween Afghanistan and Iraq, Sudan is close by, and Pakistan is a short trip to the east.

I wonder how many times we have had carriers off the coast of Iran in the past 3 decades. Many other coasts as well.

It's called "freedom of navigation", ...we can go wherever we want whenever we want as long as it's in international waters and we abide by international law.

The United States Navy has had ships operating in the Persian Gulf for nearly thirty years, including aircraft carriers. If you knew a carrier battlegroup has in the Gulf, then you should know that we have had ships patrolling there for quite a while.

Bush doesn't trust Iran as we all know.He isn't taking any chances.We have these carriers stationed in lots of places.

They don't hope for war. They hope to defend our nation and our allies. If a nuclear missile is flying out of Iran - they can shoot at it. Missiles or any aggressive military force.

We have them there so that Iran doesn't get any ideas like stopping oil shipments out of the Gulf.

The Navy is just on vacation. They got bored with Disney Land and decided to see what the rest of the world could offer as far as recreation.

Or it could be that the US Navy wasn't happy with the whole having sailors kidnapped by Iran like what happened to the Brits recently... who were also just there on vacation as it happens. Turns out the Mid East is quite popular as a vacation spot recently.

Or it could be that the US Navy wasn't happy with the Iranian Navy aggressively approaching US ships and dropping things in the water around them while threatening to blow the US ships up.

Or it could be that Iran is involving itself in killing US service members in Iraq (who are also just there for vacation as it happens) while also threatening the nuclear annihilation of Israel as they work on their nuclear program.

Or it could be that Iran is just jealous that Iraq and Afghanistan are getting all the visitors by so many people on vacation and is hoping to get some visitors of their own.
