Why does the USMC plan on upgrading their Amtracks?

First off if you are one of those YATYAS people you probably will not like what I will say so just stop reading here you might be offended
We have essentially used the same design since the 50's only adding minor upgrades
The armor is so thin we had to use Bradleys and Strikers to go in Fallujah
And they move ridiculously slow in water
water still leaks into them and needs to be pumped out
And when compared to the Russian BMP-1 it seems out classed in armor fire power and speed
Corpared to Army IFV's it makes a poor light reconnaissance vehicle
So given all this is their some plan to upgrade or replace them?

There probably have been requests for proposals for such improvements or replacements, but remember, the Marines get a smaller share of the defense budget than even the Coast Guard. |

Well we were using P5's,How-6's up until 1970
when the 3rd Amtracs Bn. was pulled out of Vietnam...
The AAV's came in shortly after that...
Still have some old pictures of them somewhere...
The British reviewed the AAV's and turned them down
because of the Aluminum Armour that produced
Phosgene Gas when it was penetrated...

Lucky for you I had a copy of the March 2009 Marine Corps Times that I didn't read yet, which is all about the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle. The EFV is what the Corps is looking at to replace the aav. But, theres a lot of foot dragging and its not looking so good for the efv. Its over budget and they still are working out the specs for it because in 2006 they did a total re-draw of the design. So we are looking at replacing them, but with what no one really knows for sure just yet. |
