Why does the ‘media’ say the war in Iraq is unpopular?

I’m a veteran and I find that we are not treated this time as we were when
coming home from ‘Nam.
Then, people cursed at us, spit on us, threw rocks & things at us, damaged our cars
and in general just hated military folks.

This time, I find total strangers shaking my hand and thanking me for my service.
One guy yesterday even drove beside me on the interstate and saluted me (I have veteran tags on my car, so he knew that I am a USN vet).

Other vets that I have spoken with are also receiving this kind of treatment.

If the war is as unpopular as the new media would have us to believe, then why are veterans being treated properly this time?

One person said "war is not a popularity contest"...unfortunately, with the way things seem to be working out, our protective forces are subject to that very thing...a popularity contest...which is exactly what the presidential elections have become the last few years.

Well ... Dang that's a good question. I assume you are from the USA. It might interest you to know that I watched a BBC video yesterday where a Brit. praised the US military to high heaven. I have noticed that the US news does kind of put a different slant on it. Maybe we should all dress up like Joe Friday and carry around signs at the TV stations that say just the facts please just the facts. In short the press in the USA has been sticking there nose in to just about ever thing for some time and seems more interested in the stations personal agenda than the truth! Any way thanks & welcome home!

It is a lot better for the liberals to have the press and politicians constantly go on about the lack of success in Iraq not matter how much we have accomplished and how much the soldiers who are there say they believe in the mission and just want to finish it.

Because most of the Media is far-left and has an Anti-Bush, agenda. I'm glad that a lot of you are being treated like the hero's you are! However this is not true in every situation. I read abut a soldier who just got back from Iraq and was visiting in Washington D.C. in uniform and was spit on and scoffed by anti-war idiots. I wish I was there. I wouldn't have been able to do much but I would've taken a lot of them down with me........ I think the Americans with any compassion whatsoever will support and love our soldiers for the great effort and heart that they've given to our country. My father-in-law is a Vietnam Vet and he is finally getting the recognition he deserved from his 2 years in the bush, and his 18 years in the Army. It only took three plus decades. :( Thank You for all you've done and May God Richly Bless our Soldiers and there families as well as our courageous allies.

We all deserved some thanks in the past, maybe now we're thanking each other, veterans thanking veterans. People like Fonda were followed around like Jesus to get their impressions by the media, which swayed a lot of people who have no mind of their own. Just because the media says "this is bad" some of us can still decide for ourselves! Fly Navy!

There are doubters (think Holocaust) who STILL do not believe in the treatment of returning Vietnam vets, but there was a reason why weapons were turned in on the planes at the beginning of the flights home. The aircrews knew the reason.

Unpopularity of the war is the goal of the media's biased selection of reports on the war.

Reporting on it's unpopularity not only helps to achieve their goals but serves as a satisfaction that their goals are being achieved.

no you have to think the opposit , we respect the troops in Iraq alot, i am an Iraqi citizen and i always speek with the troops in Iraq, thanking their survice to my country, you don't know that the saderists in my area kill anyone who even say hello to the troops .

None of the Vietnam stupidity this time, or at least not nearly as much of it.

The war itself is very unpopular per polls, even Fox news' polls show this. However the soldiers are not seen as the problem this time. We know ya'll are trying very hard to do what is right.

Anti-war people dont want to villify the soldiers, we want to end the war so ya'll can be brought home instead of fighting a war that shouldnt have happened to start with.

there is not one documented case of a single person ever spitting on a return vet from vietnam.

that aside, i have respect for the soldiers, but not the policy.

i have no problem thinking this way - and over 70% of americans are in agreement with me on this.

Because people are not mad at the veterans but at the politicians who got us into this mess. After 9/11, the US was looked upon sympathetically and kindly by the rest of the world. Now...our reputation as a country is shot.
