Cookie Monster is right. How do you choose without the right to do so? Ever seen a Theocracy with a good human rights record? They are actually worse in that aspect than Communist nations. Besides, the more Democracies in the world, the better the chance for true dialog between nations. Today Iran and Hamas promised to de-rail any peace efforts in the region. That tell you anything about Theocracy governments? Especially in that area? |

Sure they should have the freedom to Choose a Theocracy. But wait...if they choose a Theocracy that means that they must first have the freedom to do so. After all in a Theocracy the religious organization chooses what is best for the people. So the people really have no choice at all. I guess it would be kind of had to have a Theocracy without first having a Democracy.
As far as the U.S. "forcing democracy", if you really want to have an educated opinion on the mater why don't you take a course on international relations. But wait that would be exposing you to tolerance and compromise. Everything that you have preached on this forum says that you are not interested in in either of the two. |

I actually agree with you. Democracy doesn't work in every society, especially ones where a particular religion is, for lack of a better word, king. It is a part of our arrogance--we have been so successful with democracy that we think it is the best and only form of government and everyone else should strongly desire to be like us.
I am not saying the US or Democracy are bad; they both work for us. But, our ideals will NOT work everywhere else. It's like saying because driving a Ford Explorer works for us, it has to work for everybody--even the guy who is perfectly happy with his Mini Cooper. |

If and 'when" the US forces democracy down throats its for the commercial interests of its people and its corporations,banks etc.
The idea of American Exceptionalism really died when the Monroe Doctrine was introduced. The US has no right to decide the fates of other nations, just like how the American colonials hated the fact that the British Parliament dictated life for them.
Of course, if politicians had a moral compass this wouldn't happen but it does |

Good point, look at how happy the people of Iran look as they chant "DEATH TO AMERICA! DEATH TO ISRAEL!!!", and they certainly aren't free. Also consider the joy of all the people killed by the Taliban for "crimes" like being Christian.
Now let's think about what happens in your dream of sharia law in the United States... Would anyone have any real choice ever again? |
