There has been no draft since Vietnam and the likelihood of reinstating it are slim to none. Not one Soldier, Marine, Sailor, or Airman wants someone watching his back that doesn't want to be there. An all volunteer military is the way to go and we are not hurting for numbers |

Shock and Awe

Because we have this thing called plenty of volunteers 'stepping up to the plate' and draftees aren't needed and would erode our military's quality right now. No need to get politicial about Obama or McCain. We aren't in the throes of WW2 again and need 8 million men in uniform. |

Because there is no draft. The all-volunteer force came into being in 1973. Despite that, President Carter re-instituted registration for Selective Service during his administration. Failure to register was tied to denial of Federal student loan assistance and a number of other Federal programs. That's why young men have to register. But, it is a great waste of time. The current training requirements for military personnel mitigate against restoration of the draft because training would eat up most of a two year obligation, leaving little time for employment of that individual in his position.
To date, only one elected official has called for resumption of the draft. That is Congressman Charles Rangel of New York. He was drafted and served in the Korean conflict. But, he has a high unemployment rate for males 18-26 years of age in his district. So, he views the draft as a Federal jobs program. So far his legislative proposal has drawn no co-sponsors or supporters. |

Because there is no draft in effect, and also there are enough people joining on their own. |

Gotta have more explosions!

There's no need to have one - the current structure, organization, doctrine and very nature of the military means there is no necessity to conscript new members.
Without a major conventional war going on, conscription into today's high-tech and more individually-expensive military would cost too much to justify. Maybe later, hey? |

We don't have a draft in this country,it an all volunteer army.Only in a crisis would our government think of intuiting the draft. |

Because there are plenty of people answering the call on their own, its called patriotism and serving something higher than yourself. This is why we do not have a draft. |

this may be difficult for you or others to understand, but the real reason they don't have to worry about a draft is, because there is no draft. pretty simple really, huh? |

I don't know ... maybe it has something to do with the fact that there IS NO DRAFT / CONSCRIPTION in the United States. |

Some do.. in nations which have the draft.
However, since I presume you're talking about the United States' youth; It's because there is no draft. |

Because the Cons found out during Vietnam that drafting the sons of the middle class made no political sense. It was electoral suicide for them eventually and for a decade drove away a slew of potential voters.
What operates now is an economic draft. Keeping the working class on the verge of starvation forces many of their sons and daughters to join join for medical and education benefits. Many of them join simply to get a job.
We treat the working class in this country like serfs. Now we use them as cannon fodder.
Welcome to the middle ages - the USA 2008 |

That probably depends on who wins the election this year. If it is McCain, then they might have something to worry about. |
