Actually the military DOES accept a G.E.D. to enlist. The Air Force does not, but they are the only one. As long as you hold a H.S. Diploma or Equilavent, then you have to take the ASVAB. So, in all honesty, its not holding the G.E.D. that is keeping you from getting, rather it is more than likely some other factor and I am going to say that it is probably one of the top three reasons: 1. Failure of ASVAB 2. Over height/weight 3. Medical reasoning, typically asthma. Thus, the reasoning why you have not been enlisted.
I know I enlisted at 17, so all you have to do is work at it. I noticed others have said go to community college. In all honesty, if you have the G.E.D. then there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to enlist, unless it is one of the above top three reasons. Just a suggestion: Take a couple of college courses and while doing that, still try to enlist. Work on everything for the ASVAB. Go to Military.com and on there home page they have a link to advice on taking the ASVAB, loosing weight, etc. It is a great website and I reccommend joining FREE, as it constantly is updating and always giving more information. Again, just a suggestion. |

Things have changed.
I went in without a diploma and got a G.E.D. while in the Navy. 1972 |

I think they all do except for the Air Force due to over-recruiting. I'd have to say that the Army MUST accept a GED... they're so eager to grab anyone they can... or even the National Guard or Reserves... I thought it was just the AF that you had to have a High School Diploma. |

WHy? becuase the military is not as easy as you may think, they want people that can think for themsleves and not be trouble makers. Let me ask this why did you not graduate. If there is a VERY GOOD reason it can be waived but has to be a good reason. |

They do accept GED! All branches. It is the ASVAB that determines if you are smart enough! |

You can join the military with a GED I don't know who told you that you can't because they are wrong. |

Finishing high school is a form of commitment and the services are looking for people who can commit.
Getting a GED is an excellent alternative if you cannot finish a regular diploma but in life you must realize they are not equal |

the military doesn't *accept*(not except) as many GED holders because it is NOT viewed as being equal to a HS diploma. a GED means you quit school, for whatever reason. Means you didn't show perseverance. GED exams are typically written at the 8th grade level, NOT the 12th grade level. They are seen as taking the easy way out instead of doing the four years of high school like everybody else did.
Today's military is highly educated and is using a lot of High Tech gear. If you want to have the same advantages as a HS graduate, then get 15 100 level or higher college credits(one semester) at your local Community college. that elevates your GED up the same tier as a regualr HS diploma. |

probably cause there are enough trouble makers in the military as it is. they are stereotyping.... but for the most part its an accurate stereotype. |

If you can't make it in a real High School, you can't make it in the military, for it is sure harder than high school. |

maybe you should do some research because the military does except a g.e.d |

I think you mean "accept" it when enlisting. The point is, that many jobs in the military require a massive amount of time sitting in a class room and learning. Each time you get promoted you have to go to a large classroom like school and you are expected to pass. People who get a G.E.D are generally viewed by the military as "those who couldn't hack high school". I know this is not always the case but the American standard for minimum education is a high school diploma. A G.E.D is viewed as a clever way to do less than the minimum.
The Army will allow you to enlist with a G.E.D (on a limited bases)as long as you meet all the other requirements. I don't know who told you that a HS diploma is a requirement. Go take a few community college classes (one semester should do) and they try and enlist. Do like fingerpainting 101 and some other gimmes....They probably will not give you a huge signing bonus but you are eligible for all the other benefits. Just go to college if and when you get in and put all the naysayers to shame.
I worked with a lot of people with G.E.D's and I have to say that their job performance was not bad it just wasn't on par with the high school grads. I do not believe this was because they were stupid they just on average tended to be very immature because they bailed out of HS at 16 and joined at 17. HS grads where 18 or 19. Trust me, once you are in, nobody is going to care what type of HS completion you have.
Point being, do not let a G.E.D hold you back. I have seen people with G.E.D's get PhD's. Go for it. |

Because those with a GED apparently don't recognize the difference between "accept" and "except." |
