Simply because we need everyone else.
America depends on many other countries. Their competitive advantages are as important to us us ours are to them. Americanism, patriotism of such ignores how much we need others, but when you look at our trade balances you realize that the largest number of any economic issue is the trade number.
Also, not only because we need others, but because we (the majority of Americans) know that we are not the only ones who would attack. Sometimes we forget we are very powerful one on one, but not one on many. Yes, we all like to feel we are the best andf the strongest, but look within and you will find many reminders of the opposite.
