If the SA80 is more efficient, why haven't the American military branches replaced the M16 with it?

The military's contract with Colt. The military also wants to buy a new rifle that is vastly superior than the ones they have. So far there is no rifle out there that meets that criteria. |

I guess they do not want to be outdone by the British, in the same way they would rather use the 30 year old Abrams tank than the obviously superior Challenger 2.
Edit: USMC 1812, If you compare the two, the Challenger 2 is faster, heavier, has more powerful armaments, stronger armour, better suspension and larger range. Challenger 2 eats any variation of the Abrams for breakfast. |

Stupid pride, they should have just rolled back to the M-14a much more dependable and proven weapon in combat.
Wouldn't want to piss off corporate weapons manufacturers though, you know that good ole capitalism, wins everytime, even if it means guys getting killed in combat. |

On the subject of tanks, you obviously know nothing. The M1A1 is easily the world's finest tank. Only prototypes are 30 years old. The M1A1SEP and M1A2 have proved to be among to be among the best combat-tested war machines in recent history.
The Challenger II does have a great optics setup, but even M1A1s have superior optics. |
