TO PLANKSHEER AND ALL WHO SAY THERE IS NOT A SHRED OF EVIDENCE LINKING IRAQ TO AL QAEDA, YOU NEED TO READ THIS LINK. IT WAS PREPARED BY A FORMER AIDE OF BILL CLINTON'S:
http://www.fas.org/irp/world/iraq/956-tni.htm
Now IF you even bother reading this (which I have my doubts because you are not actually interested in discovering the truth), any REASONABLE person should at least take pause and consider what is being said. Yes, there is a link. It could be a weak or a strong link. But any OPEN-MINDED and RATIONAL person cannot deny there is a link.
Read it. |

Does 9/11 ring a bell to any of you? Would you have respected your president had he been a Democrat or Independant doing the same thing, or would you prefer we lie down and do nothing?
In answer to your question, I think she should just make sure she does some very unbiased research. Not go by what poeple say on yahoo answers, but instead go on the facts. |

Man, if you do your daughters homework from these answers she will have to repeat the grade.
I would like to add to this but you have so many conflicting views I would just add to the confusion.
I will say this though that 9/11 didn't have anything to do with it. I wish that I was one of the first to answer because I would try to be more factual then others but at this point you probably don't know who to believe. You might be able to go to your local library or library on line to get the information that you need. Hope this helps. |

Bush had planned to do that all along. We used the panic after 9/11 to make palatable the notion of attacking a lightly defended country that happened to be sitting on top of the worlds second largest petrolium reserves.
Prompted by Neo Conservative thinkers such as Wolfowitz, Libby, VP Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Richard Pearle the decision was made to drum up a false justification and scare the congress and house into giving wide latitude on war powers.
The Neo Conservative doctrine called the Project for a New American Century laid down a stratege for creating US friendly democracies in Middle East - especially where there is oil to be found.
WE had no moral justification for this invasion and occupation.
Last note; Jeffrey's : Do you honestly think Iraq had ANYthing to do with 9/11? Why?
Work at home: That is correct. There is not a shred of evidence linking Iraq and 9/11 - except in your mind.
Name calling won't alter that. Even Bush and Rumsfeld admitted there is no connection between the two. I suppose you know more than they do? |

Because:
-Saddam continued to violate the Gulf War Cease Fire protocals continuously for 12 years. That is 12 YEARS of diplomacy, sanctions, limited bombings, threats of more land actions, more failed diplomacy, more threats, more of Saddam thumbing his nose at the world while he illegally rearmed.
-Saddam, and others, violated the "oil for food program" to the tune of billions of dollars/euros.
-Saddam financed terrorists in Palastine and had contacts with Al Qeada. These include meetings with known operatives in the Czech Republic (confirmed by Czech internal security forces), the Salmon Pak (South of Baghdad) and the Ansar al-Islam (northern Iraq area) terrorist training camps (One of them held a painting of the WTC burning while Saddam smoked a cigar).
-Provided medical aid and training for Al Qeada as they fled the Afghan area. A case in point is the confession by Al Qeada terrorists captured in Jordan (2004) when they attempted to conduct a WMD attack (Sarin gas and 70 other chemicals:20 tons total, w/explosives: see links) in Amman, Jordan. These terrorists told the story of how they escaped Afghanistan, fled to Iraq, followed the convoys hauling goods out of Iraq before the Coalition invasion (remember those? The media doesn't and they reported them), and ended up in the Becca Valley with the WMDs and Iraqi forces, working for a man named Zarqari. Name ring a bell?
-Openly defied UN resolutions, many with use of force clauses.
-Even during their final inspection in 2003, the UN teams were still finding MORE chemical weapons systems that Iraq "forgot" to document. Also included in the same report was two Iraqi surface to surface missle systems which greatly exceeded the range limitation stipulated by the cease fire (UN report titled: s-2003-232 :Twelfth quarterly report of the Executive Chairman of the
United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection
Commission in accordance with paragraph 12 of Security
Council resolution 1284 (1999))
-Continued attacks on Coalition aircraft patrolling the No-Fly Zones.
-Sorties by MIG-25RB Aircraft into the southern No-Fly Zone (how he got those and maintained them with "sanctions" in place is a really good question).
-Attempted to assasinate a former US President.
-Provided aid and comfort to terrorists retreating from Afghanistan
-Saddam had WMDs. Every nation consulted (France, UK, Russia) and the UN all agreed he had them. Saddam boasted of fooling the inspectors in the 90s. We attacked him several times with aircraft and missles in the 90s. Clinton even ordered the commencement of "Operation Desert Fox" to punish Iraq for non-compliance with inspectors.
-WMDs have been found all over Iraq. Usually in smaller ammounts, but this is to be expected with the ammount of warning Saddam had of the invasion.
This has taken some time to get all the links and cross referencing. This links are difficult to find unless you know dates and places since they were buried by the media and others whose hatred of the President outweighs their duty to the people of the USA. I hope this helps. |

A long series of American diplomatic SNAFUs or manipulation and greed. The USA put Saddam Hussein in power as a buffer against Soviet-backed Iran as well as aided and trained the people in Afganistan as guerrilla fighters against the USSR. Whether there was a desire to maintain control or just plain stupidity that happens from diplomatic appointee changes due to administration changes, the US diplomat to Iraq failed to protest Saddam's suggestion that Iraq invade Kuwait back in 1990. This may be because Hussein was quick to move and because Bush presidents tend to freeze up like a deer in the headlights of an oncoming emergency. It could also be deception in creating an excuse to attack and reap resources from Iraq under the guise of a "just war." In either case, diplomatic communication issues resulted in Iraq deciding to attack Kuwait thinking that the USA and UN would not get involved. One couldsay that Iraq's response to Kuwait tapping the same oil fields was a bad decision about oil, so likewise the situation was addressed with the same bad solution, not considering the consequences (or, for "enlighted individuals," investing in oil and weapons and making a huge profit on the war). I expect that if someone was not profiting from the war, then it would not be happening (just like the US doesn't get involved in many places in Africa). |

The main reason it was started was to overthrow Saddam Hussein, as he was in violation of 13 United Nations violations. One of those violations was to open his borders to United Nations Nuclear Inspectors, which he didn't. He threatened use of weapons of mass destruction. He still possessed long range missiles (in violation of UN Security).
After 11 years of noncompliance and suspicion of weapons of mass destruction, the United States disarmed Iraq and overthrew Saddam Hussien. |

This isn't about liberals and conservatives. Bush isn't even a conservative. Conservatives like smaller government, less spending, and lower taxes. The federal government's bigger than it's ever been. The republican controlled Congress and the so-called republican President are on a spending spree. The Federal Budget Deficit and the National Debt are huge. And the Bush Administration wants Congress to raise the debt ceiling to $9 trillion. Bush isn't concerned for the welfare of the United States. He's thinking only about himself.
Bush has been a failure in just about everything he's done before he was President. The companies he founded failed. He couldn't get elected to political office. It wasn't until after his father was President that Bush was elected Governor of Texas. His father and his father's friends have helped him out a lot in the past.
When Bush became President, he had to prove to himself that he could be a better President than his father. Here are two ways he did that:
1) He invaded Iraq. His father wouldn't even think of invading a sovriegn country. And he did something his father wouldn't or couldn't do.
2) He was re-elected. His father only served one term as President. And Bush did it without the help of his father.
But besides Bush proving to himself that he's a better President than his father was, what other reasons would be want to invade Iraq?
First of all, it would assure re-election. War time Presidents always get re-elected.
Next, it would get rid of Sadam (a thorn in the sides of him and his royal families in the Middle East).
Third, the Iraqi people would be eternally greatful to the US (Just like the German people were after WWII).
Lastly, there are all of those untapped oil reserves there. And regarding oil deposits, much of Iraq is still unexplored. There's a very good chance that Iraq could have even more oil than Saudi Arabia does.
In ending, consider myself independent. I don't believe in either political party. What I do believe in is honesty. And I haven't seen it from this President. In January of 2009, he'll be gone and we'll be left with this mess the try and clean up. |

Well, you could use one of these mindless answers like "Bush Wanted Oil" because we are obviously not taking their oil or our prices would be going down.
The reason the war was started was to strike a chord in the heart of terrorism which was Iraq and Afghanistan and send these lunatics a message. That message was, "we are not going to stand by and watch while you fly planes into our buildings".
Now, the reason is progressed into Iraq and became a war of liberation is a question better asked another day. But honestly folks, can anyone disagree that taking a country that is ruled and opressed by an evil dictator who dispatches chemical weapons on his own people and giving them a chance at democracy and freedom is a bad thing?
Nobody likes war, but it is neccessary sometimes.
