Why is it so bad a thing for Iraq to divide into 3 separate countries?

Things seem to be headed in this direction anyway.

Its not bad, but its not our job. We should pull out, let them slip into civil war, split into 3 countries and settle it all themselves. America needs to back out, and let them do it on their own.

That's not a bad idea at all. They should divide it into regular, super, and premium gas.

The answer is simple. The Shiites make up the largest group of people, but don't have control of any significant oil reserves. The Kurds control most of the oil. The Sunni's control what's leftover. Without oil two of the three new countries would revert back to extreme poverty.

Also Turkey has a large population of Kurds that want to unite with the Iraqi Kurds. Turkey has threatened military action to prevent this.

Therefore, it is very unlikely to happen even though on the surface it seems to makes sense.

I think Dam dawg is right - it has to do with who will be sitting on the oil reserves. That is what keeps them from turning into three parcels. The Kurds are the smallest group and sit on the largest oil reserves - plus, they are very closely aligned with Iran.

madjer21755
Well, the turks have stated there will not be an Kurdish nation on their flank.

ZINGER
I think it would be a great idea. However, the oil reserves cannot be divided equally which is a sticking point and one that would be hard to overcome.

Suni, Shia muslims and Kurds in the north - this is the natural pull of the people and yet USA wants to keep this country as one.

Long-run - look at Yugoslavia splitting up into its natural components - this will happen in Iraq within the next 10 years.

The only natural resource or export for that matter that Iraq has is oil. The oil fields are located in the north and south. There is no possible way to split up the land equitably giving each side all the decent land it wants. Plus Iraq has been so integrated population wise (not idealogically) that you would have to empty Baghdad and all other cities and displace millions of people.

There are many more people in Iraq than just Kurds, Sunni's, and Shia's. It's like splitting up America and giving all the land to Whites, Blacks, and Mexicans. There are a lot of other people who are here. If Iraq were split up into 3 seperate countries they would be taken over in a minute and would not be able to independently defend themselves. The sunni's would side with the Baathe party in syria. The kurds would most likely be invaded or slowly killed off by the turks and the shia would have no choice but to be annexed by Iran (who is not an arabic country, they speak farsi and are persian).

I've been to Yugoslavia (kosovo exactly) and getting split up into seperate states (kosovo and former Yugoslav areas are not really sovereign countries) really hasn't done them a lot of good. The UN still has troops there and will continue to have them there for decades. That is a whole new problem I really don't feel like addressing.

No, things are not headed the way of sub-dividing. Things are headed toward unions. We have and have had for a long time a global economy. Any tribe of man so neolithic or blinded by the stupidity of dogma and nationalism and racism as to actually believe it can survive today without participating in the global economy is doomed. In many ways, U.S. citizens are doomed in that way. They don't seem to understand that even their lands and roads and utilities and bridges and businesses are being bought up by foreign interests. The American big brave white boy hoots and toots and gets all racist over illegal immigration and how the Mexicans are taking their jobs away from U.S. citizens. But, that poor loser is pathetically unaware that it is not the illegal Mexican worker who has stolen his future from him. It was the Christian/Conservative base in this nation that methodically watered down math and science so much in our public schools for the last 50 years that our high school graduates, in todays truly global market, cannot even pass the international tests for janitorial jobs. (That position requires a fundamental knowledge of chemistry.) We must unite as decent people. All of us. Everywhere. Big business has united and they have unhealthy plans for the world. Workers of every tribe of man everywhere in the world, must not let people like Bush and his greedy Republican/Conservative ilk take us into the future on the strength of their morbid plans. We'll all be indentured servants for the rest of our lives.

This section of the world has been at war with each other for centuries. The larger the countries the safer they are from attack after we pull out. Three small countries would be shredded in a matter of a few years. Turkey has stated will not allow the Kurds to have their own country on their Southern Flank. This is do to a centuries old grudge. How long before they were slaughtered. The Nothern part of Iraq (mostly Kurds) has the most Oil. Would they be able to buy protection?
Remember the Iraq/Iran was of the 1980s when Iraq attacked Iran. With the current situation in Iran do you think Iraq would last long? Or be slaughtered, worse than in their current cival war? Just like the US, united they stand, divided they fall.

Because then I'd have to remember 3 names of places where we need to to go to kick some ***. No need to make the list longer than it is.

The current Iraqi government is certainly not in favor of this scenario. For the moment, if things could be worked out, it doesn't seem like a bad plan. As I said, for the moment!

Eventually, what you would have is three state at odds with one another, disputes over oil revenues, outside influence supporting one over the other.

I could invision an all out war between the Sunni's in the middle, supported by Syria, and the Shiite in the south, supported by Iran. In the meantime, the Kurds in the north would be busy building their own, independent country and ticking off the Turks while they are at it. That too, would probably wind up in yet another war. The biggest problem between the three, would be oil. Is that the same oil the liberals say that GWB is after?

Mr Single
Well it will bad for all world because if Iraqi is divide into 3 countries u would have south where are the shi ite will united with iran. u will north iraqi where are kurks , it will be invade by turkey to take control of north iraqi, u would have western iraqi where are sunni maybe they will united with syria or be one country. So if shi ite united with iran it change all Middle East. Iran would have control of south Oilfield in Iraqi and Turkey would control north oilfields.

johnfromdon
Its not a bad thing for Iraq to be divided into three. But as we have seen in the past, and history has a habbit of repeating itself - one section will want something of the other part - and there you go - civil war.

If you get the different stypes of islam going to one place and the other - you may get a repeat of the bloodshed of when the seperation of India and Paksistan occured in 1947.

I see it as the only solution----providing we depose those psychopathic Mullahs in Iran first. Once this is accomplished, Assad the Syrian will be forcibly placated.
Another positive is that by giving the Kurds the norther region of Iraq, it will, hopefully, slow the spread of Islamisim that is threatening the government of Turkey.

Diadem
...lol, its not a bad thing if it blows up into 12 countries ,,,i dont care.
