Because soldiers do their jobs. Not saying that killing is a great thing, but most people that have to do it, dont want to reminded of it. Its just something they had to do to make it to the next day. People use the saying all time time. I want to join the military to kill people. I have heard this so many time, and the hard core ones that say this all the time are the biggest wimps when it comes down to putting lead down range. Think about it, if you killed someone, would you want to be asked about it all the time? You are going to get all types of responce's for this one. Once you kill someone, things start going through your head, like what about that persons family, what is that was me, did I do the right thing? These questions can not be answered, so it best not to try to bring them up. |

I would think its rude because they dont want to kill people, and the fact that they have probably already give them nightmares and it already upsets them as it is... they dont want to be reminded!! I'm guessing!! |

There is nothing romantic about combat. It is a terrifying, brutal experience and many soldiers have enough trouble coming to terms with it in their own minds without having to satisfy other people's morbid curiosity.
As was already said, its none of your business. If they want to discuss, they will bring it up. Otherwise, its off limits. |

he's been through a lot and that's porbably a hard subject to talk about. my brother is in the militart and so is my cousin. they come hom and for months they are shut down, shocked about what they've seen. |

Well out of respect for the soldier, I would not want to ask just because it might cause him more stress. The military don't need any more stress. They need love and acceptance when they get home. |

Because it's a very personal question. If they have killed someone they are going to have a lot of mixed feelings about it. They might be ashamed, or feel guilt, or anger. It's a big deal, not something to be discussed lightly. |

its not that its wrong per se, its just not something we really enjoy discussing with someone who hasn't experienced the same thing. Like if you ask a firefighter if they ever saw someone burn to death in a fire or a police officer if they have ever had to shoot someone. Its not something we talk about outside our community because its private and personal and most people wouldn't know what to say. My actions have resulted in the death of a lot of people i dont talk about it but i dont feel guilty about it either. |

Most of them are trying to live normal non violent lives inside of regular society. Asking those sorts of questions can trigger memories that are painful to them. We ask a lot from soldiers and there is not usually a good reason to bring up issues to add to their pain.
Hint the ones that talk the most are usually the ones who saw and did the least. The real killers are the ones you might not even guess served in the military because they never bring it up and avoid all conversations on the subject until some body around them who knows their story makes them talk. And then they usually only speak briefly. |

They are not proud of what they've done, they don't want to kill people and don't want to remember why! It was either the terrorist, or his team, which would help save more lives, while the terrorist would help kill more lives.
My 17 year old brother in law asked my husband and OMG I wanted to cry. I just hugged my husband tight. I HAVE never asked him and never will, I know it's happened, but he doesn't need more reminders of what happened over there. If he want's to let it all out, he will do it by himself. |

I have read the decoration citations for several Marines, Airmen, Sailors and Soldiers that I have known in the American Legion and DAV. All were heroes by any definition and most were VERY subdued about their service in combat. Some passed away and THEN we found out that they were had Silver or Bronze Stars.
They never talked about their kills, it was always painful. |
