Why is the british army one of the best armies in the world?

well its in the top ten but the numbers are very low compared to the other powers..

ItÂ´s because the men/women that sign up are not forced to,and therefore it makes them more dedicated for the tasks in front of them.Many other countries have conscription, thank god the U.K does not.We are protected by real professionals that take their jobs seriously..

The British army does not possess a large army like what it had in the past but it makes up for it and Britain has always been a country that can punch above its weight.

From my experience, 1957-1965, it's all to do with endless hours of square bashing (drill) and boot polishing (bull) and being screamed at by sargeants who's dad's served at Waterloo.

Something like that - it all boils down to discipline really and the British Army has plenty of it.

He should know, he went to Eton school and served in the British Army but only after serving with the Rebs during the Spanish Civil war of c1936-1938 etc. . .

Because of their staunch refusal to DISCRIMINATE. They're prepared to go ANYWHERE, ANYWHEN, to kill ANYONE, and BE killed, for ANY reason that their Government comes out with, whether it makes sense or not, whether it's a hunt for WMD's one minute and "Operation Iraqi Freedom" the next, depending on how it's panning out. UN mandate? NO UN mandate? Doesn't matter to these heroes. THAT's why they're the best--they're the most bollockbrained, useable and expendable. What Government could ask for more from its troops? They're even--get this--prepared to stay in Afghanistan to get whacked daily to prevent Al Qaida from setting up a "TRAINING CAMP", comprising of little more than an ASSAULT COURSE in the sand! (all while carrying an AK47, of course). Worthy work indeed!

EDIT--they're even prepared to do all this without the PROPER EQUIPMENT! No body armour? No problem. Only five bullets a man? "We're there." Now you tell me--what other Army in the world is prepared to do all that? THAT's why ours are the best. Soldiers of any other country treated like that would QUIT INSTANTLY in disgust. Nuff said.
