Because it has been going on for so long that we expect to see at least one death a day to our Military Personnel.
we have become almost desensitized to what is happening in Iraq and Afghanistan, unless it hits home to us personally, which is really sad |

simply put, it hurts our recruiting efforts. Who wants a recruiter to say "hey, want to join the military, only 1 in 10,000 die in a war!" yeah right. Sadly, it is only big news when it's someone that will catch the public's eye, and get ratings. Like that Ranger football player a few years ago. Did it tell the story of who else died that day? Nope. but he was big news for a while, simply because it would catch attention. It is a horrible thing that our media doesn't report our war heroes dying, our medal of honor veterans passing, or almost anything else about military individuals. |

We've lost over 4,000 in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's news, but not quite stop the presses level. Right now, the news cycle is being dominated by the piracy crisis off Somalia, the death of the Angels' pitcher, and locally for me, the sabotage of fiber-optic lines that cut all phone service to tens of thousands of people.
I just did a quick look at my local news pages, and three of the five have Iraq War news on the front page. |
