The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 was signed into law by Ronald Reagan. I was told while growing up in California, which had a 21yo drinking age well before was born in 1964, that it was an attempt to keep alcohol out of the hands of those under 18. Since high school students know more 18-20 year olds that would buy for them than 21 and overs. In 1982 Wisconsin was 18 while I was at Great Lakes (Illinois was 21), Florida was 19 in 1983 when I was stationed in Orlando, Idaho and Wyoming were 19 in 1984 when I was stationed in Idaho Falls and Hawaii was 18 when I was first stationed there in 1984 and that's where I turned 21.
Now, why do you have to be 21 to gamble in Nevada? Shouldn't 18-20 year olds be able to pay my state income tax as well as 21+ adults? LOL |

The drinking age is 21 because when the drinking age was 18 all the 18 year olds would get drunk and drive and kill themselves and others. |

They upped the age because of the dui's that were increasingly killing innocent bystanders. At 21, you are at lease more responsible and would consider twice before getting behind the wheel. |

Because there's a law against drinking under the age of 21. |

I know you can shoot a gun and kill people for your country, but you can't drink, however when you are deployed to Iraq, you can't drink in that country even if you are 21, how ironic, what an enigma. |

Because President James Earl Carter III convinced the Congress to pass a law tying a state's eligibility for Federal Highway funds to that state establishing a minimum age of 21 to drink.
I'm given to understand his institute in Georgia has a web site. You might want to send him an e-mail to find out what he was thinking when he did that. |

They should make it illegal to drink period. Do you know how much heartache is caused by alcoholics? I had a neighbor sweet as could be and generous as anything who died of alcoholism. She drank from the time she got up until the time she passed away. Don't start and you won't end up like that!
It's a disease you want to stay away from. |

goverment controls everything. We may fight but they will still do everything to control us. Even though this country was founded on equality they still find reasons and ways to say no to us. For example the illegal practice of building rockets to fly into and back from space. The goverment thinks its their property and thinks they are better than the average person |

Mainly because there is nothing more irresponsible and obnoxious than a drunken 18 year old. Trust me. I used to be one. Then I started getting paid to keep them out of bars. |

absolutely what i think, i even wrote a speech for english about this. it goes back to the thing where you forbid something and it just becomes more desirable. Kids "rebel" and drink because they know they aren't supposed to.
And yes, i can die for my country and operate lethal weapons but i can't consume alcohol... thats a bit twisted |
