Well, first off, I'm in the military so I have some experience in this department.
We give up everything we know to serve our country. Our family, our friends, being comfortable at where we were, and our lives. I haven't seen my family and friends in over a year. I've seen them a total of once in over 2 years.
Alot of our marriages and families fall apart b/c we're at the hands of the military 24/7, 365. Our jobs are the # 1 priorities in our life b/c we swore to protect our country and always place the mission first. (I'm a living testimony having already went through a divorce due to the military).
We gave up our freedom of speech, our rights, and seriously again, our lives. We can't speak our minds like civilians. We can't think for ourselves. We have to be told what to do. We have no rights, we don't even get discounts at stores! Everyone thinks that we have it good b/c we get things tax free on military post's, but everything is 200% overpriced.
We are MISERABLE when we train, which is about 90% of the time. We are sleeping outside in freezing to scorching hot weather. Soaking wet from the rain, from our sweat, or from the snow. We go to the field for weeks at a time with no shower, only baby wipes. We have no bathrooms in the field, only port-o-potty's. We don't get home cooked meals, we eat MRE's and terrible cafeteria food.
Deploying for 18 months, not seeing your family. Not wearing normal clothes, wearing your uncomfortable hot uniform every single day. Seeing your friends dying. Leaving on a mission only to return with less soldiers than what went out.
Most of us joined the military at a time of war. Knowing that there was a chance we would die for the freedom of others. We knew the consequences when we raised our right hand and swore in. I call that extremely brave.
Definitions of brave:
1. To overcome one's initial fear(s).
2. Strong in the face of fear; courageous. |

When you join the military you take an oath to protect the Constitution, America and it's citizens. Think about that for a minute. Every member of the military has taken an oath to protect YOU to the death. Most of us take this oath very seriously.
If I saw you in danger at a mall, I would rush to protect you because of this oath.
That right there sounds like a pretty good reason to honor veterans.
They have also sworn to follow the orders of the President. The President is the representative of the American people.
When the military goes to war, when they risks their lives or die, it is because the American people asked them to.
Think about that for a minute. The military works for the American people and take orders from the President as the representative of the people.
The military personnel that are dying, spending months away from home, enduring countless difficult times are all doing to because the American people asked them to. All of this on top of the fact that they would give their life to save your without hesitation. |

I believe that they are to be honored for all the torment they went through trying to do what they felt was right not only for us, but for human kind. I know many war veterans, and not many of them get the hugs and handshakes they deserved all those years ago. As to today's veterans (ie - first iraq war and so on) I believe that they should be honored as well, for were it not for them, we would not have survived horrors like 911. |

Because they sacrificed the freedom to pursue their own dreams and happiness so that we could continue to pursue ours. |

American Veterans should be honored for there sacrifices they have done for there country, hmmmm lets see what about the single mom who deploys to war or hostile areas around the world leaving there children with there family?
Same with the single fathers?
How about Duel Military? where both the mother and father serve? deployed to different areas around the globe?
What about those who decided to join to protect those who could not protect themselves?
Only 1% of the american population are military, why is that? Is everyone cut out to be a Soldier?
hat about me? I was offered $82,000 a year to work for a government contracter if i got out of the military doing the same job as i do in the military, why did i stay? Maybe it is because its for my Soldiers? Maybe for the Soldier standing next to me every day? Maybe its for my children? Maybe i stayed to make sure as many Soldiers, Mothers babies, fFathers Daughters, Wifes Husband or someones Brother or Sister comes home safe, alive and in one piece? Even if it Cost me my Life?
What about the Soldier who volunteers to go right back or take another soldiers spot and deploys instead of them?
What about the wounded Soldiers who try and some succeed to stay in the military? They overcome the shorcomings and adapt to complete the mission. Why do i come in early every day and stay late every night?
Honor a Soldier because they do what you will not. Honor a Soldier because they bare the burdens that you cant. Honor a Soldier because when you are asleep, they are watching over you through birthdays, hollydays, annaversaries, births, deaths. The Civillian couterparts of a soldier, (mercs, blackwater, crown corp) get paid tens of thousands a month to do the same job as a soldier that gets between 1200 and 3000 a month.
We do our job so that others dont have to.
I dont know if this helped but i also stay in for my friends and comrads i could not bring home with me, I have a wall in my home dedicated to every one i have served with that has not come home, My medals, awards and citations gather dust in my garage where they belong. Honor a Soldier because they do not ask to be Honored. |

The Taleban have to be admired as well.
USA has used it's best computer technology, it's best satellite equipment, it's best communications equipment, it's best trained troops - and still can't defeat these guys who are fighting with 1980's weapons. |
