I woudl take everything CNN puts up with a major grain of salt. Actually, with a dump truck full of grains of salt.

Anyhow, Marines are also just human beings. Human beings have their breaking point, all of them do. Some of them have it on a hair trigger, others can wade through a hundred firefights and break when they see a dog get run over. It's all depending on the individual. And what did they say about the previous action that Marine had seen? I would bet nil, or next to nil. How long has he been away from his base during operations? How long since his last hot meal? His last shower? His last uninterrupted night's sleep? His last contact with his family back home? Has he seen any of his mates get killed in action or accidents? All questions that you do not know the answer to that could affect one's reaction to the various stresses of being in an area where there is still fighting.

Also, Combat Stress Disorder, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, affect people in different ways at different times. This might have been a long time coming.
