Vietnam used to be called French Indochina. We were there in the early sixties to 'advise' the French troops on repelling communist rebels. Once the Chinese really became involved supporting the North, we became more involved militarily in supporting the South to prevent the spread of communism. As usual, the French left and let someone else fight their war. The rest is history... |

The U.S. got involved in the Vietnam conflict a few years after the French left the colonies that made up French Indochina(modern day Vietnam-Cambodia-Laos).Ho Chi Minh,the communist ruler of North Vietnam,wanted to combine the 2 Vietnams(the other-South Vietnam-which rec'd help from America-Australia and South Korea) into one whole combined Vietnam.The South Vietnamese Government refused to be goverened by the communist North and asked America for help,since the South Vietnamese did not have much of a military.We sent military advisors over in the late50's/early 1960's.It wasn't until the spring of 1964 ,when 2 north vietnamese patrol boats attacked U.S. Navy vessels off theGulf of Tonkin, that President Johnson sent the US military to south Vietnam to fight the VC (communist guerillas from the south-wearing the famous black pajamas) and the regular north vietnamese army.Some of the well known battles of the Vietnam war were-The Battle of Ia Drang Valley(made famous by the movie Mel Gibson starred in -We Were Soldiers) 1965- The siege of Khe Sahn late 67-early 1968,the Tet Offensive-Battles for Hue(also made famous in the 1987 movie-Full Metal Jacket) and retaking of the US Embassy in Saigon. |
