Military service is a noble profession that offers young people a broad variety of experience and education. |

Its not Obamas America it our America, to defend this country I will pay the price of my life to make sure its stays free..... We as a nation elected him, if we voted for him or not he is still our president and we should support him, we were all stupid enough to pick Bush a second time..... So Really Obama is not that bad. |

Yeah, ok, learn to spell America correctly you commie.
I'm going to enlist in 7 months when I graduate from college. I desire to serve the country that has helped to raise me and that has provided me with infinite opportunity for character growth. Some countries have mandatory service because it makes immature young people like you realize all that they were fortunate enough to be blessed with. |

I cannot believe the answers so far.
Because of : money, university, GI bill, housing!
No wonder America is in the pits, point me to the latrine and I'd join in covering you up.
How about honouring you country, payback for all your country has done for you, defending your fellow man? What about learning self respect and discipline?
For Americans, what about travelling the world and spreading respect and democracy? There are about 80 countries in the world where you can go and not have the natives taking taking pot shots at you, or you at them. Travel is a good one, 97% of Americans don't travel outside of their own continent and have no idea what the rest of the world think.
As for death, it comes to us all my friend. Die doing nothing or die doing something good? I know which I prefer.
Besides, I never served with anybody who thought they were going to die, it was always somebody else.
Our creed was always: Let the other b******d die for his country, I will live and fight for mine. |

A young person who has a hard time with life's everyday challenges and can't seem to cope with discipline and needs structure, and guidance in life... these sometimes called spoiled, materialistic children need a rude awakening and military is sometimes the perfect place for them to see the real world for what it should be. |

Young people desire purpose in life and if they aren't steered by their parents as they grow up, some will join the military since it will meet all of their survival needs. |

I'm a "young person", if you consider 17 young and I plan on joining the United States Navy if I can. One to serve my country, Two it can help pay for a college scholarship, Three you are looked at with respect if you've served your country in the military. |

I joined the Navy a few years ago at 18 mainly because I was sick of working at Burger King and was getting into drugs/trouble. I needed something to keep me in line and the military has changed me for the better. Other reasons might be just wanting to carry on the family tradition, travel, learn job skills, money for college. |

Normally I'd have to disagree with you but now that that guy was elected, I can't agree more. This country deserves to be protected but not at the cost of that terrorist supporters desires. He's like putting a high school student in for doing brain surgery. He just doesn't know what he's doing and anything told to him will be second hand. |

Last time I checked it was my America, and all real Americans (guessing your not since you can't spell it). I luckily didn't have to die while in the US military, but I believed that if I had to to protect the way of life of my fellow Americans I would have paid that price if asked. I certainly didn't do it for the president I did it for my family and friends and other americans (not you however). |

Besides all the good reasons from Anakin and the others, consider this.
Where else can you work for 20 years and get a retirement pension with medical benefits after 20 years ?
I joined at 17 and retired at age 40 with 23 years of service to my country. Now I live on a beautiful tropical island in theSouth Pacific (Philippines) and never have to work another day in my life ! |

I absolutely agree. My husband is in the Navy and has been for almost 4 years now. I can't even begin to tell you how upset we are that he is still obligated to fight for a country led by this idiot. I have no clue why any young person in their right mind will sign up to defend this country now. BUT of course, seeing as how obama is a liberal- all he wants is peace- once this war is over he isn't going to start a new one. hes going to let other countries walk all over ours no matter what happens. this country is going to go to sh*t SO fast. say goodbye to the good life if you're in the military or married to it... funding the military is his last care. He's already said multiple times that he thinks the military gets "paid too much". WTF?! The military is what keeps this country STANDING!! PROOF, right there- that this man has no clue what being an american is about. Muslim. |

You sound like a wonderful patriot. Remember McCain's slogan, "country first". I guess you didn't take any of that to heart.
That being said, I would never encourage my child to join the military. |
