Will America be sad over this milestone?

BAGHDAD - The overall U.S. death toll in Iraq rose to 4,000 after four soldiers were killed in a roadside bombing in Baghdad, a grim milestone.

It's a number. We have to be patient with the war. Honor the fallen, but continue to fight the war. As the Iraqi security minister has pleaded to us Americans for patience, and that is what we must give the iraqi's. Show them we are not going anywhere. What is sad is all the insults the liberals come up with. I voiced my opinion of the war, and liberals CALLED ME A COWARD. |

It is sad indeed
But it is even worse that dems are using deaths of Americans far braver than themselves for political attacks against the President |

What is the difference between the value of one life and 4,000? Casualties are an element of war, war is a necessary event to maintain order and equality. Pray for those who fight the good fight and those who lost their lives doing what they joined the military for in the first place. No nation has been established or maintained without war, there will never be a time that peace is everlasting. Numbers are for the birds, every strategy has a calculation for potential losses. If we expect to lose 10,000 men and we lose 4,000 in completing the mission that is a victory by strategic standards, but that doesn't make it any easier on the families of the 4,000 fallen.
P.S. There are over 5,000 work-related deaths in America every year. 4,000 war-related deaths in 5 years is an average of 800 a year. That works out to about 1 of every 400 soldiers sent overseas. WWI was less than 2 years and we lost 126,000. WWII was less than 4 years and we lost almost 300,000 soldiers. Vietnam was less than 8 years and we lost almost 50,000 military personnel. By historical standards this war has not been one of the most deadly for Americans. |

That is just horrible that some people just had the worst Easter of their life! The media needs to report some REAL news, not rub salt in the wound. |

America is always sad to loose it's sons and daughters. But will it be sad? Precept ion is the answer to your question. Is 4,000 to many to loose? If you perceive that 4,000 is too many to loose then you could be sad. However, we have lost more in a single day of fighting. Gettysburg had approximately 28,000 lost in the battle and over 600,000 for the entire war that last 4 years. That we lost over 3,000 from 9/11 makes many sad and this will be remembered. However how many battles have we fought where we lost men? You are not sad over those and worse, you don't remember all of them. Is there something more memorable about our current losses of 4,000? No, all that died fighting for America are all, to me sad 'milestones' that should be remembered for their sacrifice. |

Yes, it makes me sad. What really makes me sad is the feeling that the media reporting this sad event are acting with seemingly jubilation. They appear to see this as a way to further divide the country and to promote their liberal agenda. |

Sad yes but I wonder why the media never reports the good things happening in Iraq? |

I don't understand why the media is making a big deal over 4,000 deaths. Why wasn't 3,999 just as important?
It's always sad when someone dies. But what is more sad is how American media and the democrats use these deaths to profit (does not always mean monetarily) and try to make themselves look better by pointing it out.
For the family who lost a loved one, there one is not more sad or missed because of 4,000.
It's not 4,000, that's just a number, these are individuals. When the media can understand that, then we can worry less about numbers and more about real life. I'm sick of the media making the deaths of men and women into just numbers. |

Maybe not America as a whole.. But I know there are going to be 4,000 very sad families.. God Bless Our Troops and Support Our Troops!! |

Very Sad. Those numbers are for US troops and don't include DOD civilians and American contractors. |

It seems like 3,000 was yesterday, it's definatly a bad feeling......
Unfortunatly most people are so turned off now and just see it as another number..... |

Only those who know or are affected by it. It get's reported, but it's not front page news anymore, you have to go looking for it, and therefore most Americans won't even know. How can you be sad about something you don't know?
If you do know one of the fallen, I share in your loss. |

I certainly hope so. So many lives lost for what seems like a lost cause. I know that I have no idea what the troops on the ground in Iraq think about the whole situation, but I wish we could start the process of getting out. It will be a slow process but its time to start it. I think that Pres. Bush had good intentions, but now its time to let the Iraqi government handle their own civil issues.
I worry that McCain will get us involved in even more conflict if he's elected, and that the Dems, will pull us out of Iraq so fast that it causes a backlash over there that will undo what little bit of good that we did.
Are we damned if we do and damned if we don't?
Thank you to our Troops for defending us and I look forward to the day when you finally get home! |

probably not. . . .americans like big numbers.. . .that is, unless its the number of iraqi's killed (including civilians)...in which case we pretend like it doesn't count or something....you're not even allowed to mention that number, for risk of being called un-american or traitor....only some liberal hippie with commie blood running thru his veins would even mention the number of innocent women and children that have been slaughtered at the hands of the u.s. there, he said it....he must be an anti american, commie, flag burning liberal, because he thinks that the number of iraqis killed should even be mentioned on the same day as the 4000 u.s. soldiers....by the way, last year somewhere around 44 thousand got killed on u.s. highways, but we're still speeding, using cellphones, drinking and driving, driving aggressively, not yielding, and generally just being a!%holes on the highway....but those people don't count either, right? |
|

Gotta have more explosions!
 |
Unfortunately not - 4000 is just a statistic to the average person, most of whom won't be able to quote the name of just five of those fallen, let alone know their faces, backgrounds and personalities.
Just look - some people here are already justifying the figure as low by comparing it with other wars and (my favorite) roadside death statistics. Sad? I think they're ready for a thousand more. |
