Will I be able to go to Iraq or Afghanistan in the Army?

I'm joining next month and I plan on being a 68 Whiskey (Combat Medic)...
And I know it's not really a sure-fire thing...i could be stationed anywhere.
But if I make it well-known to my superiors that I do want to be in the action and I do want to be overseas and all that stuff...
Will they make sure I'm out there doing what I want to?

I know in the military it usually never is what you want,
but I dont see how it's really their loss, a person willing to go and throw their life on the line.

I just want to know if I make it clear I want to be out there, will they make sure I am?

There is nothing sure in the Army you can ask to be assigned to an infantry unit but it all has to do with slotting and openings. What unit needs you if the hospital at MAMC Ft Lewis WA needs a medic and your number comes up well you get the picture. Your recruiter has a list of units deploying and when and where and what openings those units need to fill. Go to him and have a pow-wow in his office and don't leave till you get your answers. If he won't answer tell him you are going to go to school instead of the army...Which is not a bad idea! go talk to a ROTC instructor at a college let the military pay for your school and go in as a Physicians assistant OFFICER! Get more respect guarantee action and make twice the money plus while you are in college. At least that is what the Army does! :) Good luck! Good medicine in Bad places!!

the only way anyone gets sent overseas is if the government sends the regiment or company that your in, you cant just act good in it and excpect to get sent

Like someone mentioned, talk to your recruiter about going to a unit that is possibly deploying soon. He can put that into your contract, though it is not 100% guareented. You can also get what is called AIP, assignment incentive pay, which is about $300 extra per month for your term of enlistment, to go to a unit that is possibly deploying. Pretty much you will be sent to a unit that is known for rapid deployment so at least even if you dont deploy you will still get paid. Something to look at since you want to deploy anyways.

However if the unit you are assigned to is not deploying, then you will not deploy.

if you join you can pretty much count on being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. it doesn't really matter where you want to go, where ever your gets sent you will follow
