well, I'd say if you want to join the military to get a fresh start and get away from all that, then try it out. If you want to hang around and keep doing those things, then the military is not for you. It's going to be hard work, the marines are pretty tough

I would be honest with them and tell them what you have done and when, they will be able to detect it any way. If you have all of these negative influences around you now it might just save your life to join the marine corp.

If it has been four months since your last use of anything illegal, you will pass the tests for drug use even though through your hair they will be able to tell that you have done this before so be honest!
The more important question is if you can take someone telling you what to do and how to do it every blessed day for the next four to six years... You CANNOT smoke or ingest any type of illegal substance in the armed forces! I cannot emphasize that enough. You will be rehabbed, and put in Ft Leavenworth prison if you try it.
As to your brain function, dear heart, you forgot to use spell check on your question. You will likely be assigned to the front lines rather than the more glamorous positions; such as pilot or even a tank driver, unless you remember those types of details.
The service is made it break down the man you are and to turn you into the man that they want you to be. Tough, determined, loyal and OBEDIENT.
You will sacrifice some of you individuality. Think long on this life choice before you do it.
I am NOT trying to talk you out of it! I was an Army wife and the President of the FSG for 7 years; until my then husband was hit with a hand grenade in a training accident. I am VERY PRO ARMED FORCES!

joining the marines is a honor.. if you join its not just going to cure you of your bad choices in life.. if you want to stay clean then just stop smoking.. marines teach you control, teach you to take orders, to be your best, be strong and endure. as far as brain functions.. join and see.. if you ake it through basics then you'll know for sure.. that and you'll develope a better apreiciation for the military way of life. maybe its good for you, maybe youre not cut out for it.. wont know till you try it, right? what do you have to lose?

If you're goin' to join you better get off that weed and start getting into some kind of physical shape, that way boot camp won't be QUITE as bad.

You can still join. When you going through the MEPs process, and when your in Receiving Week (1st week of bootcamp) you will be offered several chances to admit that you have done drugs in the past. It is important that when offered these "last chances" that you make it known to them that you have done drugs in the past. Preferably you want to do it the first time your offered the chance so it'll make the rest of the process easier for you. When your in Receiving Week there is a lot going on and the last thing you want to be worrying about is if they are going to pick up on your prior drug use. Also I forgot to metion that you should disclose it to your recruiter as well. They will be able to tell you more about it than I can. Especialy if there have been any policy changes since I enlisted 8 years ago. Hope I've been able to help. Take care.

If you dont smoke weed now you should be ok. However if your mind is really screwed up you wont even qualify for the marines, they will tell you to go to the McDonalds next door. Drinking isnt a problem, you wont be the only one in there that does that.

Go talk to a recruiter, they will tell you what to do. They need motivated people that WANT to be there! I joined in '73, and had done copius amounts of drugs before I joined. It was the best thing I ever did (joining; not the drugs) It got me away from all the temptations, and instilled the discipline I needed in life. Tell them you want to change your life and serve your country! Tell them you won't do it anymore. If they don't take anyone that has ever done drugs, they wouldn't have anyone in the military! The Corps is a good choice, be ready for a very tough time, both mentally and physically. Start working out, sit ups, push ups, pull ups, squat thrusts and running, a lot of all the previously mentioned before you enter, will keep some of the pressure off of you while in bootcamp. If you are in top physical shape when you arrive, you'll be able to concentrate more on the the technical aspects they will be demanding that you learn. Get some books on the Corps and study the history, as you will be required to know this also! The more you know before you arrive at B/C, will be in your favor! Ask your recruiter for a copy of the " General Orders " and memorize these also, as this is one of the hardest things to remember in B/C, while under all the pressure to remember everything they want you to. Good Luck! The Marine Corps motto is " Semper Fidelus "or " Always Faithfull " Once you EARN the title, it can NEVER be taken away.

As long as you ditch the drugs, you're good.

You have to do drug tests regularly in the military, and many of them you don't know about in advance, so you can't take stuff to flush it out of your system. They'll just say "we have a formation", and you'll show up and they say "fill the cup."

If you come up positive on a drug test, you'll catch hell. Depending on who your superiors are, you might be court martialed and go to jail, you might be chaptered(kicked out), or you might be restricted to the barracks, have to pull extra duty(manual labor after the work day is over), and have to forfeit pay.

As far as the alcohol, half the people in the military are alcoholics. Just don't show up to work drunk, don't drink and drive, don't OD, and don't do anything stupid while you're drunk(well, TOO stupid.)

Pretty much everyone has smoked pot at one time or another. Not a big deal. Tell your recuriter. When you get to boot camp they will have what they call the "moment of truth". Answer all questions honestly and you will be fine. Even if you smoked the day before and and tell them at the "moment of truth" you are usually given an exemption when it shows up on the drug test. Best thing is be completely honest and you will be fine. Glad to hear you our joining our beloved Corps. I'm really kicking myself for getting out after 6 years. Good luck to you.
