Will my friend be sent to Iraq?
|
My friend for as long as I know has always wanted to join the Marines, just because he thinks it looks cool and he "likes challenges".
In the end, he did just that.
The problem is, he doesn't think he's ever going to war and thinks that they're "pulling Marines out now". Instead, he's going to try to become a lawyer or something through the Marines.
Ignoring the fact that the Marines say "You're a killler first" and the fact that they've trained him to use and handle weapons and ignoring the fact that he's gone to boot camp, he still doesn't think he's going to be deployed and doesn't plan on it at all.
Or, at the very most, he will be deployed but he'll "play XBox 360" the whole time. He claims someone told him that that's what they did.
So, I ask you. Is what he is saying true? Just because he's "training to become a lawyer" in the Marines, will he not be deployed to war?
If he is deployed, will he be generally inactive and playing video games once he gets there?
Because I just don't believe any of it. Additional Details Oh, I'm sorry.
Those were his exact words when I said "You're a killer first."
I don't know if that was him paraphrasing or if that was a direct quote from his high-ups, but that's what he told me while we were on the subject.

Where to begin... :P
Well here I go:
If you join the Military because you like a challenge and think it's cool, you should reconcider. I just had to say that. But anyways, he will more than likely be deployed to Iraq and or Afghanistan. We MIGHT pull troops out of Iraq SOON, but even if we do we are not taking them out of Afghanistan. While in Afganistan (trust me I have experince with 4 tours) you most certainly do not play Xbox360 all the time. They have places calles USO witch let you go there SOMETIMES and play playstation or wahtever and watch movies. it is unlikely to go there often, let alone all the time. So what he is saying is not true. I've been deployed in 2003 (iraq) 2005 (iraq) 2005 (Afganistan) 2007 (afganistan) 2008 (Afganistan).
Hope this answers your question,
Staff Sergeant Wentworth. |

He likely will not be sent to Iraq as a lot of the Marines are being pulled out of Iraq but he likely will go to Afghanistan. I know my husband spent a couple of weeks playing a lot of XBox but that was only because they were moving their helos from one location to another so he couldn't fly. So yes there will be times where he's sitting on his butt doing nothing but there will also be times when he's working his butt off with little to no sleep. And yeah I have to agree with the others that his training to be a lawyer sounds like a crock, are you sure he's not just being trained to work in the legal office? |

Training to be a lawyer? There is no training there. It is called a Law degree, and you can not earn that until after you earn a Bachelors. Total that is between 6-9 years of school, depending on dedication of the student. There is no "training" to be a lawyer. Something is not right with that claim of his.
When you speak of training, are you speaking of Boot camp and other occupational training? If he does become a Lawyer, it will not be necessary to deploy him as much. However, nothing is set in stone. Yet, he should know that the Military is increasing the mission in Afghanistan and deployments there are increasing. Someone who is AD can answer this question better than me. I was just addressing the "training to be a lawyer" claim. |

in a time of war, he will be sent to war. maybe it is just his way of dealing with it. ignoring the fact that he will be deployed. its some kind of self defense mechanism.
Is he attending a university to become a lawyer? I agree w/ the 1st answer...someone is not trained to be a lawyer, they have to get a series of degree's..it takes between 6-8 years...depending on his commentment level durring college. |

Some people never deploy at all. I can't stand them. Your friend will likely deploy soon.
Some people stay inside the wire the whole time they are deployed. They work during the day and play video games for a few hours before going to bed. My husband calls them "fobbits" because they always stay on the FOB.
My husband built patrol bases in Iraq. On this tour, he's a fobbit. It just depends on the job your friend is doing. |

If his job in the Marines is a lawyer (if that even is an MOS) than he will not be deployed nearly as much as most other Marines, but he WILL be deployed. Probably not to Iraq, but Afganistan. They are pulling troops out of Iraq and moving more into Afganistan. When he is deployed he will not be playing Xbox. |

Shinoko,
First off, the Marines don't say you ar a killer first. They say every marine a rifleman. When you protect the weak or help liberate those who need liberating you aren't a killer, you are a warrior. Secondly, we are pulling out of Iraq however we are boosting the numbers in Afghanistan. Chances are if he is in the legal field he will do alot of what he told you. Not everyone in the combat zone is in the fight. If he is playing video games all day we are wasting tax payer dollars so I hope that they keep him actively engaged, but that would be more legal stuff and not fighting stuff. Only the planners at HQ Marine Corps know if his unit is going to deploy (if it isn't already scheduled.)
Hope this helps |
