Here's the situation , Im 19 and want to join the marine corps. I have dental braces on my teeth for the past 2 years. They cut off my medical insureance so I miss alot of apointments. My teeth for the most part look fine and it was for cosmetic porpouses only. Ive had all my wisdom teeth extracted and I have a retainer. I heard around that the military would not take me if i remove my braces early because their afraid of shifting teeth movement , migranes , or things of that nature. I want to know if this is true or not . If anyone can give me any advice i would HIGHLY appreciate it , thank you.

So go to a the recruiter with my braces on ? I certainly dont want to leave them on. I cant afford them any longer and by the time they come off I know i'll be like 21 or something like that. I just want to know if I have to take them off myself or with MEPS or somebody take em off for me.

When I joined the Marine Corps I had my braces on for two years also. I got them removed before boot camp. You CANNOT attend boot camp w/ them on. You can take a retainer. You can wear the retainer @ night.
I had absolutely NO problems w/ my teeth during or after boot camp.
Yes, YOU will have to find a dentist who will take them off for you.
No worries. You can go to the recruiter w/ them on. You just cannot go to boot camp w/ them on. |

here is the truth.. the military wont let you join if you have braces because they are afraid you will cut your gums on your braces. they will let you in if you have them removed or if you have your dentist sign a letter stating they will have the braces off in time..
here is what i suggest.. you have to be active duty for insurance, not sure if the military dental will cover braces or not, but i suggest you take care of your teeth, and once your teeth are fine, then enlist.... i went threw it with the army.. if you still dont think you got the right answer go ask a recruiter |

Military Medical Standards for Enlistment & Appointment
Dental
d. Orthodontic appliances for continued treatment (V53.4) (attached or removable). Retainer appliances are permissible, provided all active orthodontic treatment has been satisfactorily completed.
This basically means leave them on, let the military dentists deal with them. Just make sure you have everything about them on your medical history paperwork. |
