Will there be a civil war #2?

I think there is certainly a possibility. I personally believe that a strong secession movement is over the horizon and depending on the economic strife that unfolds during Obama's presidency, he might very well experience that unenviable challenge that Lincoln had.

Already, a civil war has started in small fashion, but undeclared and without any government support. The real question is... if states started to secede again, would the government seek to intervene militarily. I would hope the answer would be no, but there is no one to know for certain. If war did break out, I'll try and work out how it might play out...

1. There would be a several month long period where states would be voting on secession issues and various states might break away. Depending on who was president, action may be swift or may be delayed.

2. A major concern would be the fact that we no longer have sufficient troop strength to maintain our present military commitments outside of the country and make any large scale effort to quash a new confederacy. However, it may not take masses of troops to respond.

3. Another major issue would be the fact that many in our military are "Southerners" and there would be some serious issues getting those people to continue fighting abroad or to invade their homeland.

4. I think any military actions in a modern civil war would likely be on a much smaller scale than before and would be special units occupying television and government facilities in an attempt to re-establish federal control over various states.

5. While I think there is a huge difference between how people feel now and how they felt 150 years ago, there are still many who would gladly fight on both sides of a formal civil war. Add to that the fact that strong confederate states like South Carolina (who almost seceded not long ago) have black populations as high as 30%, so there might be serious problems with "federal loyalists".

I would hope that it would not come to riots and brother against brother again/neighbor against neighbor, but a few small incidents could easily ignite a chain reaction would resulted in a lot of pent-up hostilities boiling over.

A final major difference and issue might be the secession of states like Vermont, Idaho, Hawaii and Alaska. Unlike the first CW, where both armies were attempting to take the capital of the other which was less than 100 miles away, neither would likely be attempting such a move. Rather, the federal government would seek to quash the "rebel leadership" in each state and control things like the airwaves, satellite communications, etc... probably a good deal of secret arrests, assasinations and black helicopters.

could be. there is a growing storm of people that make good decisions, take person responsibility and make their own way that are fed up with picking up the slack for the dumb, irresponsible and welfare recipients.

Less government, less programs, less taxes.

the Roman lasted nearly 1101 years ,do you think they ever thought its was gonna fall ? probably almost every country will have a downfall in the future ,specially if resources become scarce

and yes we got new technology and all that ,but we still human and we make mistakes..

Hopefully. Im from the south originally but became smart as I grew out of my teens and moved to California. Im 27 and still able to fight so I wouldnt mind going back to visit if you know what I mean.

They may have been doing this to justify emergency martial law powers to control the dissenting people.

By comparing him now to Lincoln they are setting the stage for further comparisons of Lincoln's unconstitutional military policing of the American people that wish to use Thomas Jeffersons writings from the Declaration of Independence and dissolve a former gov't and install a new one.
