What can Airmen, Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, and those in the Coast Guard be called when you mean one member of any of the armed services? Is there a word that they can be called collectively? GI's, government issues, doesn't sound respectful enough.
You can say "support our troops", but in spite of a comment from Mr. Bush, it is not proper to say "a troop" when referring to an individual.
Are women of the Air Force also called Airmen?

service member is the most politically correct term.
serviceman is also acceptable but the women libbers will be all over you for it.
Once they are OUT of the service, you call them veterans.
As far as the Air Force, Airman, Master Sgt, etc are used regardless of gender. |

In the Army, we are called Soldier, the Marines are called Marine, the Air Force are called Airmen and Navy and Coast Guard are called Sailor. A generic term would just be Soldier, as most will answer to that. |

Yes, women in the Air Force are called airmen. The lowest enlisted ranks, regardless of gender are still Airman Basic, Airman, Airman First Class and Senior Airman.
Who says it isn't proper to say "a troop" when referring to an individual? I knew sergeants and officers who would refer to an individual as "a good troop" all the time. Just because you may not be used to hearing it doesn't mean it's grammatically improper. |

Yes, woman in the USAF are Airmen.
You become a veteran when you are no longer employed by the military. |

Service member if currently in active duty or in the guard/reserve
Veteran if out of the service, Veteran may be considered of having served during a conflict in active duty/guard/reserve.
Airmen is general term for everyone in the Air Force. |

Excellent question, GI as I remember stood for general infantry...but as far a a blanket for all members of the Military, I think the occupation they hold in the Military should be what the title is ...IE: I was an Aviation Electronics Technician/ Com-Nav tech...
I believe this would fit well across the board |

soldier is good , a troop though is a cavalry soldier . i am in 2nd cav stryker and we are troops , also as for respect i like it when i am called by my rank |

yea, women are also Airmen, it's like "man-kind" there's no such thing as "woman kind" but anyways I'd call them Freedom Protectors or armed forces.. |

Yes, AF women are called airmen. Its a rank. WAF would be the general term for women in the AF. |

soldier, a member of the navy is a naval soldier, an airforce pilot is an Airforce Soldier, etc. all members of the military are Soldiers, and yes the referance to an individual as "troop" is also correct. |
