Would America ever disband the Marine Corps?
Find answers to your legal question.

Would America ever disband the Marine Corps?

I am not asking for this to happen, I think it would be terrible, but I'm asking if in the future, would it be possible-- for either an economic, political or social (unpopularity) reason-- for the Marine Corps to be disbanded. It seems the Marines have always existed not as a need, but because Americans WANT them to exist. If we become less and less military oriented as a country, would the need for the Corps ever go away?

Ok you civilian lumps listen up! The Corps is going no where. They fill the vital role of specialized littoral warfare. That means in the coastal areas of the world. They are specially trained and equipped to handle that mission better than any one else. Each service branch has a specialized mission they perform superbly and although we all wander in out of each others areas of expertise each still retains and maintains its supremacy in its area of excellence. Each branch is vital and essential. As a retired Air Force Master Sergeant I am proud of my Air Force but I would gladly concede the USMC needs to take the beach, the Navy needs to put the Somali pirates in their place and the Army needs to handle large scale land based operations.
I envy their rich and honorable history and esprit de corpse but it is the specialized mission and skills they bring to the fight that will ensure them a future.
Come to think of it in just about every futuristic sci-fi movie I ever saw where warriors were landed on a planet those guys were refereed to as Marines.

Would it be possible? Sure, it could be possible. This doesn't mean it is likely. Lots of things are possible but very unlikely.

No, America would not disband the Marine Corps. Disbanding the Marine Corps would make no sense since economically they are one of the best, doing more with less as they say.

That has been bandied about many times in the history of the Corps. Even now there are some discussions that the Marines duplicate some Army missions and some Naval missions. I do not think that it is possible at the present time. The Corps has an excellent PR reputation.

No. The Marine Corps has a grand tradition beginning with the whole starting in a bar in Philly story.

And even countries that haven't fought wars in years still have a military.

The budgetary and mission rivalry between the US Army and the USMC has been going on since the USMC was formed. The Army has always tried to absorb all the resources that are for the USMC. It has happened many times throughout US history, specifically after a war. However, it has not happened relatively recently and I believe that the Army has now realized how critical the USMC is to overall US strategic success.

That would be a very big mistake. That USMC is very important. As there is a contingent of marines on nearly every large naval vessel in service in nearly every spot of the world, the USMC are in a very good position to be first on scene when there is trouble.

it could happen
but i dont think it would
if it did then it would be sad
marines are known to be more stronger then anything

Unlikely, because of their PR-machine. I have spent time in both the army and the corps.

As a simple statement of fact the U.S. doesn't need the marine corps in order to be a military power. The marine corps' two main claims-to-fame are (1) they are America's "expeditionary force-in-readiness" and (2) they are trained, equipped and configured to perform forced-entry amphibious assault.

The U.S. Army has conducted both missions numerous times in it's 234 year history. It has functioned as an expeditionary force in the war with Mexico, the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, the Boxer Rebellion, the Korean War and arguably, WWI and the first & second Gulf Wars.

The U.S. Army has conducted amphibious assaults during the war with Mexico, the Civil War and WWII, among others. In fact, the army has conducted more (and larger) amphibious assaults than the marines have. (The marines take pains to *not* advertise that fact).

In this era of dwindling resources something has to give. The army needs two more divisions. The corps should be reduced proportionately in order to make that happen.

at one point post WW1 they came close. Then WW2 came about.

I think a better question is should they disband the Navy and Air force and leave the Army and Marines - who do most of the fighting and dieing.

Jabber
They should disband those cowards!

Sebastian3297
nope, it would never happen, marines are the first branch to enter any battlefield. it wouldnt be wise for that to be the army because they are less experienced. marines will always be there, if there is any military brach that gets dissolved it will be the national guard(if it ever happens)
