Would I be able to achieve my BSN while active duty in the air force?
|
So I want to be a nurse in the air force, but that requires me to get my BSN. I was on the live chat talking to a recruiter and they said that I would have to go active duty and school part time when I'm off. The af would be paying for it all though through tuition assistance. I'm slightly skeptical though because nursing school is a lot of work, and I don't know if I would have enough off time to do it, or even be able to find a program where I could do nursing school at night. What are your opinions?

It may be easier to do Air Guard or Air Reserve - that way you can qualify for some (possibly more in the Air Guard) tuition assistance, a Reserve GI Bill and pursue the education that seems to be your primary interest. After getting your civilian qualifications, you can go in as an officer/nurse. |

1. The Air Force pays 100% tuition assiatance while on active duty to take college class's in your off duty time.
2. Why are you assuming you will work a day shift ? You could just as easily be working midnight to 8 am.
3. Yes, it is hard to be on active duty and take college class's, you have to budget your time.
4. Your not gonna be going to school full time on active duty, you will be taking one or two class's at a time.
5. Yes, you can earn a degree on active duty, just don't expect to earn it in 4 years.
6. It is easy, you just ask to work the 4 pm to midnight shift or the midnight to 8 am shift. Then you can take class's at a local university during the day.
7, Figure on it taking about 7 years to earn your BSN while on active duty.
Most likely what you would do, is take as many class's as you can, while on active duty for 4 years, then get out of the AF and use your GI Bill to complete your BSN at the university of your choice.
You could easily get two years worth of college out of the way while on active duty for 4 years. |

Have you spoken with a Health Care recruiter? That's who you need to speak with. It's my understanding that they are actively recruiting folks to be nurses and paying for the schooling. I don't know all of the ins and outs of the program, but definately worth checking into. A Health Care or Officer recruiter will have more specialized knowledge about what is going on in the officer corp and what is available.
Good luck!
EDIT: Just found this!!
US Air Force Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program
The Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program (NECP) offers active duty enlisted personnel the opportunity to earn a Bachelor’s degree in a high-demand academic major. Upon completion of NECP and passing the National Council Licensure Examination, students will be commissioned then attend Commissioned Officer Training and the Nurse Transition Program, with PCS/PCA to final assignment location.
NECP applicants must have at least 59 semester hours completed before applying to the program. Students will complete the last two years of their degree at a college or university with an AFROTC detachment of a college/university that has a “cross-town agreement” with a college or university with an AFROTC detachment that is in the area.
So... you could whip out your first 1/2 of your degree as enlisted, then jump to this program. TA would cover 100% of tuition for those classes, you would just have to pay for books. Also, the AF has a great CLEP/DANTES program, totally free of charge for active duty. So, you could knock a bunch out that way as well. |

It depends! A lot on your job and also where you get stationed.
I have a friend who was SF and she worked nights so she could go to Nursing school during the day....I don't know how she managed on so little sleep but she did.
there are a few nursing schools that offer night and weekend classes but not very many.
You might consider looking into ROTC - they have scholarships esp for nursing students - the catch is that you have to be accepted into a nursing program which typically happens your sophmore/junior year. |

why not just become a medic, that way the air force will teach you how to be a nurse and you still have the GI Bill |
