No, it would give the leaders in the Army migraines from having to deal with the idiots that don't want to be there from jump street.
I was a career Marine and I have to tell you, the one thing that I was raised on was that the draft was a disaster when it came to completing even the simplest of missions. My very first mentor kept telling me "once all the Vietnam Draftees that never left finally retire, things will run alot smoother"...so the damage lasted alot longer than most thought.
Sure, you have a certain percentage that actually do their jobs to the best of their ability and try; however the rest are just a major pain in the *** and not worth the money it took to "train" them...and then they waste money when everyone has to supervise every step they make, less we have a disaster on our hands.
So, in short (or not) NO, IT WILL NOT SOLVE ANYTHING. Leave the members serving with people who want to be there...don't dump the garbage on their doorstep and expect diamonds in 4 years. |

The US has never had conscription.
Conscription is where everyone of a certain age, must serve a certain term in the military.
The US has always used a Draft,
A draft allows the military to conscript ( used differently than conscription ) enough people to meet the manning goals as set by Congress, if there are not enough volunteers.
.........................................
Since we already meet the manning goals as set by Congress, with volunteers, a draft wouldn't actually do
anything. |

No, in fact it may give warmongering nutters like Blair and Bush even more hapless squaddies to send to illegal and immoral wars which serve our countries ill. Stick to a professional army and stick to using them for the greater good instead of sending them ill equipped and undermanned into pointless danger. The way to deal with anti-social yobs is crack down hard on them and make sure they are punished effectively instead of respecting their "human right" above those of decent law abiding citizens. |

Yeah.
Unemployment.
It'd pretty much screw everything else though.
You think taxes are high now? Imagine how much money would need to be thrown at the MoD to train every single eighteen year old and employ them for four years. Might be good for the people doing it, whether they like it or not, but the country simply cannot afford it. And the Army wouldn't thank you for thousands of conscripts. Nor would the other services.
Old Naval quote.
"A volunteer is worth ten pressed men."
If the entire Iraqi army had been fully professional, highly trained volunteers, as very few of their units were, the US and UK would have had substantially more difficulty invading Iraq. |

Conscription is pretty evil in my opinion.
It's the opposite of "pursuit of happiness."
If I had ever been conscripted I would have burnt the draft card. I'm fortunate that it has never happened to me, but if they had a draft right now for the immoral wars our country is inflicting upon the world, I'd expect a not-very-pleasant reaction.
Less military. Not more. |

I think it's an excellent way of teaching people respect and would definately help to reduce crime and make the country a better place to live. I would extend not only subscription, but for those that offend as youths being send to military type schools where they are taught respect.
As a way of trying to nip the problem in the bud prior to children becoming crime statistics, ensure funding is in place to encourage more out of school clubs and organistations. Scouts, Guides, Cadets, Boys Brigade, Sports Clubs. A choice of these should be available to all children with excellent facilities so children have something better to do. |

unless you allow the army to beat the crap out of them, it will not work.
just like the 1950's army TV show (UK) some of the lads on there did not toe the line the only reason it worked back in the 1950's was coz they beat up the conscripts |

It would certainly trigger some extreme changes, whether they would qualify as "solutions" is problematic. It would be political suicide to even try, so everyone responsible would be gone at the next election and the new people would probably have the votes to override any Presidential veto of a Bill forcing immediate withdrawal. That massive a change in policy all at once at time when our economy is so weak might well prove disastrous in the short term and trigger long term consequences for years to come. |

Conscription wouldn't work but making the parents of these no-marks responsible for them probably would and the dutch idea of sticking them in containers under motorway bridges were they cant pollute the rest of society |
