Im in the DEP...i chose 6 at meps, but im thinking i want to do 4 now cause i may not like the job i get. Can i still change it?

I dont have my job yet...or ship date...its the AF...

It basically comes down to this.
If you plan on doing your service and getting out for work or college, do 4 years.
If you plan on making the AF a career, then do 6 years.
The only real difference, is you will make E-2 out of basic and make E-3 after 20 weeks or Graduating Tech School.
VS having to wait 16 months for E-3
And it will get you E-4 , from 3 to 6 months early than those who enlist as an E-1 |

4, because you can always extend towards the end for another few years. If you happen to not like what you do then 6 years is a long time to do. You can cross-train, but it is a fairly hard process do to. |

i believe that you can change your MOS or rate. you will have to get a new contract and might want to ask for just 4 years instead. 6 years is a long time for a job that you dont like. |

Until you actually sign the contract, you're not obligated to the Gov., I don't care what your recruiter tells you. The more often you re-enlist, the more often your records are updated. That could really come in handy once you get in range of the E-6, E-7 rank.
If the contract is not the way you want it...you tell them what you want, and if you want a 4 year enlistment, then make sure it's on the contract before you sign it. If they say, go ahead and sign this one, and I'll update it before I send it in, don't sign it. There will be no updating your contract once you've signed.
There are pros and cons to any length of enlistment, especially if it's your initial. By law, your initial enlistment from start to finish is 8 years. If you enlist for 4, you'll do at least 4 active, and 4 on the reserve side. If you enlist for 6, then you'll do 6 active, and 2 on the reserve side. You can re-enlist up to 90 days early from your EOAS, and possibly get better orders, but you need to get with your Command Career Counselor when you start thinking about that.
