Would joining the Navy be a mistake?
Find answers to your legal question.

Would joining the Navy be a mistake?

I'm a 24 year old female with a degree in International Relations (3.4 GPA). I am looking for work but I keep rolling the idea of joining the Navy around in my head. I am thinking of enlistment as it would grant me student loan repayment, a better choice of technical fields, blah, blah, blah.
Am I crazy to want to do this? I just feel like work in the private sector is just so... "then what?".
I want to be a part of something bigger but I need to know if I'm making a mistake.

Hey! I just got out of the Navy after finishing a four year enlistment. I enjoyed my time in, but after it was up, I decided to split. If you are a college graduate, consider applying to get into OCS (officer candidate school). You obviously are a well educated person, and no offense to other enlistees, but someone who spent four years in I don't know how well you would enjoy the enlisted lifestyle. Not everyone, but a lot of people come between 18-21 and it seemed like all my command did was babysit them. Joining the military, any branch is a good idea, but I think you are beyond enlisting, and should apply to OCS. You will have to go through a couple boards and they will determine your elgibility. I have a good friend who is going through the process right now. If you have any more specific questions, send me a message and I can get it from the horses mouth.

You have a degree? And you want to enlist?? Are you sure? Why?

I'm goin with "uninformed" not "crazy".... not yet. You need to consider being an officer. With a degree like that I can easily see you tagging along behind some Politician or flag officer as an adjunct for the State Department or something. Have you seen the enlisted payscale juxtaposed with the Officer pay scale? You should. You may want to look straight at the foreign service with the State Department. Like Law Enforcement? Try Diplomatic Security Service. They'd all love your degree and your gpa.

Give it some more thought. But "enlisting"??? No. Bad idea.

With Barack Obama cutting back on military health care benefits...I would think again! He has plans to take VA money from all veterans, he just tried to then put it on the back-burner for the time being, but has plans to take whatever he can away from war hero's and give the money to illegal immigrants who support him as he is pro-amnesty and anti- U.S.military! I would be careful joining any military service with him in charge!

Personally I would never consider making a conscious choice to serve our country a mistake. The military is not for everyone, though. The only advice I can offer you is think it through rationally, is it really what you want to do? If the answer is yes, then it's not a mistake.

Go Air Force/// they treat women the best, best housing, food, safest branch, best for jobs afterwards too.

Best for women
1- Air Force ...excellent
2- Navy ...good
3- Army ...so so
4- Coast Guard ...bad choice
5- Marine Corps ...horrible choice

The last 2 treat women like s#it! because they don't think women should be there.

Never go enlisted in todays military if you got a degree. Go make twice the money as an officer.

Air Force or Navy Officer... or nothing is what I would do if I were you.

I know exactly what you mean! Just give it time to soak in. Do some research, think it through. Make sure you really know what you're getting yourself into, and make sure it would be enough for you to handle. Joining the military is a big decision, so don't jump to anything too quickly (: Good luck!

If you want to work in International Relations then enlistment will probably not be a good way to go. There are few jobs that deal with that field and they are mostly 100% manned. The Navy is tightening the reins on enlistment and, while you are qualified, you will not know what jobs they will offer you. Right now the Navy is focusing on "non-traditional" female jobs, technicians, mechanics, etc. Your best bet would be to talk with the OPO for your local recruiting district. Even starting with an enlisted recruiter, they are required to refer you to the OPO at least for an initial interview.

On the flip side. If you are more of a hands on, like to do the work instead of giving orders, then enlistment is for you. Serving your country is never a bad decision, but an honorable one. Anyone who tells you different does not have the heart to serve or did serve but not honorably and had a bad experience.

After all of the advice, it is still your decision. Think it through and make the best decision for you.

Best of luck.

Joining as enlisted if you have a degree in international relations with a decent GPA would be a considerable mistake. Talk to a USN OPO(Officer Programs Officer.)

Calculate regular military compensation for various ranks and locations at the following link. Location makes a significant difference due to the housing allowance(BAH.) Single Enlisted Sailors ranking below E-5 live in the barracks and do not collect BAH:

2nd Lt( Army, Air Force, Marines) = Ensign(Navy, C.G.) = O-1.
1st Lt( Army, Air Force, Marines) = Lt JG(Navy, C.G.) = O-2.
Captain( Army, Air Force, Marines)= Lt(Navy, C.G.) = O-3.
Advancement to O-2 by about the 18th month.
Advancement to O-3 by about 37th month
Good Luck!

Sure join the Navy. Get your benefits. Make a ton of money without repaying any student loans from some fraudulent financial institution and become a Republican. Then say how you made it on your own without anyone's help. Run for office as a war hero and become a Congressman who after two terms excepts a million dollar a year job as a Washington Lobbyist. No, your not crazy. This is the new American dream.

No Its Not crazy,If thats what you want you do it,cause if you dont you will always wonder what it would have been like if you did
