Would the Allies have won world war 2 without the Americans?

A guy at works thinks we still could have won without the Americans because of the size of the Russian army , I think different.
What do you think?
Additional Details
I think we would not have stood any chance at all without the Americans help.

Yes they would have. Britain had already won important battles such as the Battle of Britain on its own, and the Russians had it covered on the Eastern front. The Soviet Union was a machine. It would never stop until it had victory. It just would have taken longer without American money.

And to the Obama fan boy, Germany never imposed its language on countries it conquered.

It's likely to have ended in an Armistice. Nazi Germany had tried to invade the British Isles in the Battle of Britain, and failed. Here, the British had no outside help. Nazi Germany then tried to inavde the Soviet Union with the Battle of Stalingrad, in which they also failed after an enormous loss of lives on both sides. These could be viewed as the borders of the third reich.

If the USA hadn't become involved in the war, D-Day probably wouldn't have been put into action, which freed the countries on the Western front from Nazi Germany. However the Canadians had joined the allied fairly early, and played an important role during the landings at Normandy. Added to the fact Charles de Gaulle of the free french had set up a government in exile in London indicates that there would have been some sort of an attempt at a coup against the Nazi government. The Eastern front was composed almost entirely of Soviet soldiers, which reached Berlin first.

My own opinion is that had the USA not joined the war on the allies' side, initially there would have been an armistice, with the Third Reich stretching from occupied France in the west to Poland in the East, with the British, Soviets, and Canadians treading on eggshells, waiting to see what would happen next.

yes they would have, but not as quick

The US would have had their economic growth stuck at 1951 levels if Germany had won. They wouldn't have had a large enough export base to fund any of their world domination plans and would be a continental backwater.

A full occupation of Russia would have been impossible, it would have probably ended in a bloody stalement with so many millions dead that some sort of compromise would have been reached.

It's an interesting question. Even if you assume that the Soviets and British fought extremely bravely and competently there is one battle for certain that could not have been won without the US and this battle was the one that decided the fate of Great Britain. It was the Battle of the Atlantic. Even Churchill said that the only thing that scared him during the war was the U-Boat menace. That was one crucial battle that the Soviets were utterly incapable of influencing. During the war, US shipyards simply built ships faster than the Germans could sink them. If the Battle of the Atlantic would have been lost, the British people would have been defeated by the only thing that could have beaten them: starvation.

Loss of the Atlantic would also have meant no aid for the Soviet Union. No convoys from Great Britain to Murmansk. Some people believe that the Soviet Union could have beaten Germany on their own but I disagree. The British and the US together, made one contribution to the war effort that the Soviets were never able to match: the strategic bombing of Germany. If the German industrial base had remained intact throughout the war, then the Soviets would have faced far greater numbers of every kind of German weapon. Although post war investigation revealed that the Germans were no where near the completion of an atomic bomb, with intact cities, factories and laboratories, who knows what they might have accomplished in the end especially if they had more time. Even under constant bombing they came up with the V-1 and V-2 rockets. Rocket manufacturing sites were targets of the highest priority. How would the Soviets have coped if Germany had been able to launch tens of thousands of V-2 rockets against them? How far east would the Soviets have had to move? It's interesting.

The Yankees barely contributed to the war. They stood back and watched and used 2 nuclear bombs after they realised they do not have the military personnel capability to attack in any meaningful and co-ordinated way

The Allies would probably have lost without America. that is not to say America were the most important member, however. The British Empire, The USSR and America were all essential to victory in World War II. Had the allies lost any of these three, the other 2 would probably have lost.

Britain was the undisputed Naval Power of the world, and was responsible for partially crushing the luftwaffe, as well as dealing Germany its first defeat in the Battle of Britain.

America was the economic powerhouse and provided weapons and ammunition for both Russia and Britain.

Russia was the military powerhouse, and it was the Russian army's vast size and sheer determination that 'ripped the heart' out of the German Wehrmacht (army).

I doubt we could have won without the Americans. Or the British. Or the Russians. Maybe we could have done it without the Australians or the French. Maybe.

The point is it took a fairly united world to beat the Germans and their allies. No one country did it or could have done it at that time.

Almost certainly not. It is possible that if nuclear weapons weren't an issue then the soviets might have pushed germany hard enough that the regime would topple. Of course, all of the former german states would then be Russian vassals (Poland etc in the real world) but there you go.

However, the Germans were not too far away from making an atomic bomb when they were defeated. The war would have taken much longer and the Germans would have had a lot more resources as they'd only have had a war on one front. Germany would probably have got the atomic bomb first and America would have had serious trouble catching up.

Britain could have won the war without America. Britain had won the battle of Britain already. All the USA done was come into the war very late and just added a few more troops. Britain and Russia would have won the war without America.

Joe
They already were by the time the US joined the war (which was 3 years after it started).

I think so, but i also happen to think Europe would look like Africa as a result.

Well we weren't in any danger of invasion, when all America was doing was charging Britain a national debt to supply us with weapons, and also at that time I think Russia were in bed with the Krauts,
we managed to withdraw ourselves from the mire of French fields and we had a standing Army of over a million men, we ruled the waves to a point, and our fighters had deterred daytime bombing,
we may not have liberated France or Europe, and if Hitler ha-dent invaded Russia then I feel a truce would have been signed, America had no intention of going to war, but a little Nip in the air over Pearl Harbour awoke a sleeping giant, the Austrian corporal followed his mentor Napoleon and invaded Russia and the rest is history,
so although we might not have lost the war without America, we certainly wouldn't have won it,
and I for one salute all those that fought on our side,
except for Marion Morrison, he killed thousands on screen but never fought in real life.

Maybe, but not only would millions more people have died, but the political map of the world would also look rather different.

The German air force had been defeated in the battle of Britain. Their navy was shrinking fast and no longer a serious problem and after the disaster of the the Russian front, the Russians were overwhelming the German forces everywhere. The truth is that by the time the Americans joined the fight, the Germans were all but defeated. BUT you'll never get them to admit that.....and in all seriousness, the Germans put up one Hell of a fight towards the end. Eight year old boys were knocking out allied tanks with anti tank weapons and manning heavy machine guns to defend villages. Quite remarkable.....You don't ever see their courage recognised do you. And yet those children were as brave as any soldier. I think its time they were recognised. If they were American there would be at least a thousand films in the can by now.

I wish you would have had to try. You'd be speaking perfect German and I wouldn't have had to hear you filthy British disrespect our American troops for 60 flippin years.

At that time the united states had more industrial capacity than the rest of the world combined and then some. We poured billions of dollars in armaments to the uk and russia before we even entered the war. Without us the entire continent of europe would be known as germany.
