My son wants to join the Marines. He is trying to get a GED, but failed the first test. He is still on a 6 grade level.
He is not good at taking test, if he gets a GED, does he stand a chance of passing the military ASVAB?

absolutly not i have a high school diploma and when i took the asvab about a month ago i got a 41 i want to join the marines but you need a minimum of 50 it used to be like 30 but nowa days with all these people who want to sign up because of the economy it is now 50 |

He will not pass the ASVAB (most likely) with a minimum score of 32. He will not even be considered for an enlistment without a GED or HSD. If they take him with a GED (which would require a waiver) he will need to score 50 or better on the ASVAB.
We have a hard enough time finding high school grads who can pass the thing.

I'm not even sure if they accept GED's anymore. My recruiter mentioned something about it. And, not being mean, but if he has a 6th grade equivalent education, the chance of getting a good score on the ASVAB is not likely. A 32 is the lowest accepted score and then all he can be in is Infantry. Hope it helps and good luck. |

In order to enlist with a GED, your son would need to get 15 college credits, to make his GED equal to that of a High School diploma
None of the branches are accepting GED's until at least oct 09, and then again there is only a small % that can be accept with a GED in every branch ( around 1-4% of the entire enlistment pool), and I know the Marines accept the fewest GED's out of all the Branches. |

He probably won't find it easy - military.com has sample ASVAB tests - 2 short, 2 full, that he can try. You have to sign up for an account, though. |
