Sure but the Chinese wouldn't do very well. They have lots of people but we have lots of nukes. They have nukes too, about a 100th of what we have. And their technology is so bad I doubt they would be able to hit their targets. So while we might lose one or two cities and a few cow pastures we could wipe the planet with China. |

yup. they have lots of people but we have lots of missiles. |

As well as Neville Shute, read Robert Heinleim's "Starship Troopers" on which the film was based, very loosely, where it illustrates a possible war between America and China |

The Chinese do not have a conventional power projection capability (e.g., no carrier, no real aerial refuelling capability, limited amphibs, etc.). The PRC has a very limited strategic nuclear force. Heck, most argue that the PRC couldn't even take Taiwan if the U.S. chose to oppose them.
The Chinese military is fairly well designed to perform its primary function: defense of the homeland. They would get their butts handed to them if they tried to project power elsewhere.

read 'On the beach' by Neville Shute
it deals with just such a scenario
{edit}
I see the two answers above me deal with the question from a different angle - who would win - which, is a moot point when the chinese have nuclear capabilities |

China had already shown the capability to shoot down satellites in space. With that capability, they will be able to shoot down America's GPS satellites. Since all US ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, smart bombs all rely on GPS guidance to direct their flight-paths towards their targets, they would be rendered blind and useless when GPS satellites were destroyed.
Another potent weapon that the Chinese can use is cyber-hacking. With many millions of Chinese being trained and well-versed in cyber-hacking, they can easily flood Internet connections in the US, causing them to slow-down, become overloaded with network traffic, or crash. Since the US military relies on Internet technology for coordination between the different Command and Control Centers, this will adversely degrade communications.
With the advantages of high-technology effectively neutralized, the war will simply turn into a conventional war. |

The Chinese are in the same position as Russia was in the Cold War. There are enough nukes in the world to turn them all (and us) into crispy little critters. Hence a stand off and no likelihood of a huge war. If the ka ka hits the fan, it will be caused by a rogue nation with nothing to lose and the brains of a cretin.
BTW. China has the time and patience to bring down the west thru financial/economic means. Stupid they are not, so they'll simply sit in the weeds and wait for the right moment. |

Actually it has happened before, if you take a closer look at history. More precisely, if you look at the Korean War, it gives you a snap shot of what would happen if China releases it's war machine. To give you a quick answer, it would be a stalemate, just like the Korean War. I must point out that a successful war campaign, depends of many things: whether you your country have been invaded, whether your army is attacking, or fighting in the middle of a civil war and the type of terrain or geographical location. China has some up-date-equipment, but most of it (example tanks & planes) was designed a decade ago or so) compare to state of the art equipment that the west currently has. Must point out the it’s no the machine, but the man behind the machine that makes the difference. In many countries armies are used to control it’s population (not only to protect from foreign attack). Unlike the US soldier, that is mostly deployed overseas (some exceptions - during natural emergencies). One other thing to take into account is that in many countries there is a mandatory age (of 18) to serve in their military. Thus, many don’t want to be there. Unlike us, that have a volunteer army, which tends to perform better in a broad number of tasks. Lastly, if China unleashed a war, it is likely the rest of the world would join (just like in the Korean War), so it would be a stalemate, but with high casualties. |

Just how would China do that ?
China does not have a Blue Water Navy.
The do not have the logistics capability to supply their army outside of China.
Which would limit them to attacking neighboring countries. |

China has about 150 nuclear warheads, not as many as the US (I think in the region of 10,000) but enough to do damage that would last for years. whoever they were at war with would retaliate if it came to nuclear strikes and the the whole world would unravel. It would survive but would take a long time to get back to the level we're currently at. |

It depends on how good their Field Generals are.
Sheer numbers do not insure victory. If in the heat of battle adjustments aren't made properly, it can lead to an overwhelming route of superior force numbers.
If that weren't true, there's a good chance Europe would be under Ottoman control. Instead, 70,000 Polish, German and French troops defeated 130,000 ottoman's in 1673. |

yes easily the fact is china has a massive army but it is equipped with older poorer equipment.
Saddam had a massive army that lasted only days
China does not even have a functional aircraft carrier their sub fleet is made up mainly of aged kilo class vessels of the los angeles era
Their air force is not equipped to deal with the likes of the raptor or the euro fighter.
China may have a massive army but I doubt if they would even be able to transport them to Tawain far less anywhere else,
I think the chinese themselves are very well aware of this and that is why they have concentrated their efforts into economic growth |

Yes the world would survive, China as we know it today may be changed just a tad though |

they would certainly have plenty of cannon fodder, but with out using nuclear weapons they would be beaten. |

Short answer is yes, the world would survive. Depending on the nature of the warfare would depend what state the world would be in. Certainly would not be a better place than now. God knows how many dead, injured people etc |

america + europe would eat them alive.
Altot of death, but americas technology simply owns.
china has people as a major milatry resource, it be virtually impossible for them to land their army's onto america soil, the point? american can and would sit around all day firing thousands of missles.
nuclear weapons prevent this from happening, no one wants to get wiped out for no good reason. |

Why are all the answers like 'Yeah American would kill China'. Who mentioned America, the question focuses on China. Typical Americans throwing their weight around. You're the worlds biggest problem, not China. I'd rather fight alongside China than USA, I wouldn't have to worry about friendly fire then. |

would the world survive? wtf you make it look like China is the worlds enemy. I am pretty sure the most despised corrupt hypocritical and stupid nation in the world is the USA, thats all we have to worry about.
China would not do a lot because if any super power gets an edge over the other a nuke would be unleashed. Once this occurs the rest of the world will screw over whoever let the nuke off with things like propaganda making the country look unsafe and dangerous (ruining vital tourism) sanctions to ruin their economy and other stuff like just surrounding the place with troops like Germany WW2.
moral of this is that no super power could beat the other with their associated 'military juggernauts' unless their were no nukes. People who are saying 'U.S technology' blah blah blah' should realise that U.S technology is pretty **** and Russia spent far less $$$ than them and still produced way better stuff (and still do SU-37!). oh and Russia is likely to support China along with Iran and Korea (if they had to get involved). |
