Would you accept below national average wage for dodging bullets in Afghanistan?

I sure as hell wouldn't! Where is the danger money for our troops? It seems half of them have had to buy their own gear out of their wages! Additional Details It may have escaped some people's notice here, but I'm from the UK and (obviously) talking about UK soldiers, I have no idea what the US Army pays. There was an advertising campaign by the Army recently that said the starting pay for a soldier was something like £13k per year, last time I looked the National Average wage was around £16k.

What kind of price tag would you put on that kind of service? That would be like asking "how much is a life worth?" Some people just don't get paid what they deserve. Like a fireman, police, teachers and of course our servicemen/woman. We couldn't afford to pay them what their worth. I agree that they should get paid lots more. We should pay them at least as much as we pay our pro athletes!! In 1985 I started boycotting the pro's because of this very reason. I haven't been to a pro game of any type since. What they get paid is just ridiculous! |

Unless you have voluntarily served in the military, you have no grounds to complain.
Besides pay, the military personnel get training, meals, a place to sleep, free transportation, free uniforms, free equipment.
We taxpayers have to pay for all of that. When I volunteered for the army, my first month's pay was $78. If you don't like the wages, don't join.
Average wage is an irrelevant statement. |

Actually the squaddies get a range of benefits, over and above their military salary.
When I was in the mob, I used to be in the field for some 10 months a year. That saw me with a very significant pay enhancement!.......... The missus was not so enamoured with the separation, but she was an Army Brat herself, so she knew the score when we married.
As for the "buying" your own kit, well that has been a military custom for centuries. There is a military adage: "Any fool can be uncomfortable! Are you a fool?"............ or words to that effect............... |

If I could actually dodge bullets, I'd take the price of a decent costume.
Up, up, and away!
On a more serious note, no, I wouldn't. |

Its called being a patriot. Love for your country, its values, ideals and future. I'm a former US Army Airborne Ranger I sure as hell didn't do it for the money. I did it because I wanted every kid (I don't even have kids, I'm 38) to grow up the way I did. In a free society that is a democracy, a place where you can accomplish anything if you work hard and are a descent person. Being in the military isn't about money, glory and combat sure as hell isn't like the movies. Your opinion I respect the men and women who protect this great nation deserve to make more money and receive more benefits for their brave service and sacrifices they make on a daily basis. The reason any of use can do the daily thinks we do is because of them. Next time you see someone in uniform or a friend or relative who has served this country simply tell them thank-you for what they have done for this country and you. I know they will appreciate it. |

Never! The dead ones get a fancy funeral but what do the living ones get if they make it home? ...Can't adjust your life and live off a medal! or am I wrong, do returned soldiers in the US get free health benefits for all their family, get a life pension, counselling for all their family and a prospect of another job ...but what would I know I live in Australia. |

You know, I'm not disagreeing with you, but it's not anywhere near as simple as 'below national average wage' suggests.
'It seems' is not much in the way of evidence, either.
And interestingly, recently military personnel deployed to a combat zone have stopped paying tax all the time they're deployed there. I don't know about you, but I'd consider that a bloody good payrise for being in a warzone. It would take my old Navy pay up by three thousand quid.
And on a final note, I don't know anyone who earns the national average pay packet, which suggests that it's well above what most people would say was decent payment for a soldier. |

I think you are missing the point of serving your country. It is not about what you get, it is about what you give back. If that is not for you, then don't bother doing it. Thank goodness there will always be young men and women willing to make the sacrifice so you can sit on your Mom's couch playing Halo 3. |

Become a fireman. When they were on strike for more pay (it started at 17,250 pounds, after basic training), our blokes were on 11,000 for getting shot at, while in Iraq, then came home and had to do Fire strike duty. |
