Would you recommend the army as a career for someone who has a criminal record?

I'm 23 and have been in prison for assault ABH. I know I'm getting on a bit but am thinking about joining the army if they'll take me. Does it turn out to be a fresh start for people like me?

Joining the military always looks good on a resume for anyone no matter what. I don't think they'll expunge your record because you were in the army but you will have a much better chance of it getting overlooked by a future employer. Good luck.

Army does not allow people in with a felony.

I'm not sure that the armed forces takes people with criminal records.

I recently spoke to a recruiter, and the Army is tightening up its requirements for enlistees. Considering your case is disposed and you have served your time, you may have probation/parole issues to clear up before the Army will accept you. It doesn't hurt to ask, perhaps there is a mechanism in place that you can get your probation/parole discharged if you enlist.

In many cases, a tour of duty does help mitigate other occurrences in your life. The more distance you can put between you and your conviction cannot hurt. And you will hopefully gain some marketable job skills and maturity that the Army provides.

Good luck to you.

I could be wrong but i'm pretty sure that the Army doesn't inlist anyone with a criminal record.....
However it is good that you want to get your life together....
and you should try to find other ways in which to do that if i'm right about the Army.....
:O)

yes definately, my uncle was inside for a while when he was a bit younger than you and when he came out he decided to join the army, not just because it would teach him discipline and keep him out of trouble but because it meant he got to travel, meet new people all the time and it was a good wage!!
17 years on he is still in the army, happily married with three kids a four bedroom house, just recently been made a sargeant and a job he loves more than he ever imagined he could. before he settled down he had some of the best laughs which wouldnt have been possible had he had not joined the army because he would have reoffended again and would have been in and out of prison since.... i think it is the best thing you could do for yourself!

You won't get in with a criminal record, how can you join the army and try and police the trouble spots be it Northern Ireland or Iraq when you yourself have been in jail. You don,t go to the jail for a first offence.

Well the Army can either make or break you I think if your serious it will be good for you

Deathbunny
That's a felony with prison, they won't let you in the door.

Not to put too fine a point on it, military service isn't conducive to people having major issues following the rules.

marines_sweetie
im sorry to say,you can not join with an assault on your record,if it was a drunk driving thing then you could.they have recently made it clear they will not tolerate that kind of behavior,if you went to prison then you could be s.o.l. in joining.my brother in law wanted to join with an assault on his record and the guy just looked at him and laughed and told him no way,so your answer is no and you will have a hard time finding someone who will hire you

You can ask a recruiting officer but I don't think they allow people with criminal records in the military. The military is high standards. In war time as in WWII I believe they did have a group/platoon who were from some some hard core prison but the military put them thru hell and a few survived...but I don't think they do that anymore.

megamix
ideal solution for someone who has a criminal record!

miamivice666
Well its not a bad idea if they will take you.......I was talking to a warrent officer on this very subject last week..According to him they are not keen on taking people with criminal records but it isnt impossible.Get yourself fit..And get decent running times If you even let the marines cross your mind I suggest you get yourself even fitter..Although my son in law is a marine and he doesnt rate your chances because of your record.

anthony9223
You will be Lucky. They are getting choosy about who they take in now. And you don't seem to be a social type of person.Let that be a lesson to people with criminal records you ruin your chances in life.

If they let you join, you can "start" a new life, but that will always stay on your record. And steve e btw, Semper Fi is MARINE CORE! Do your research and dont offend someone for that again!

No........I would not.........Instead I would recommend the US Navy, or the coast guard. There are alot of jobs in the navy and coast guard that you would never be in a position to use a firearm. I dont care if you are a cook in the Army, you'll still have to learn to shoot, and might end up in Iraq in a convoy.
This is all stuff you cannot do being a convicted felon.

Now on the flipside of this if you have been in prison, and you still have that prison mentality, and all that crap, do all of us a favor and don't even try to serve this country, cause we don't need you.

America - no chance I'm afraid (not allowed to carry weapons if you have been to prison

England - probably not

On reading your question, the way i read it is, ok u did a bad thing, and u paid for doing so, so as far as I am concernd ur clear now, and people should respect that.

I feel that u r showing remorse for what u did and u may still feel bad in what u did, so u want to join up and make people look up to u when u come home, show people ur now a real man and they should feel a lot of respect for u joining and for becomming a man to make ur family etc proud of u.

good luck m8 and if u join up be safe.

god bless u m8

i want u to have another chance in life, and for people to let u prove it

Joining the service for any one is a fresh start.
If any service is willing to forgo your past, you will learn what being a team member is. How to work with others without loosing your temper.
There is nothing like the military service in the U.S.
I strongly suggest you speak with a recruiter. Tell him everything you have ever done. Much like a confession with a priest. If they find you lied, you will not like the outcome. They could give you a dishonorable discharge with prison time for fraudulent enlistment. If they find you told them some embarrassing things that you wish you never heard of but have learned that is not the way to go, they will determine how honest you are and in effect how much they can trust you.
They value honesty more than a criminal record.
If you hide something and an Islamic fundamentalist group learns that secret, they may have the ability to blackmail you. If you are black mailable, you are of no value to the military.

Speak to a recruiter. Find out what they have to offer you
and what you have to offer to them. If there is a match, you may even be eligible for a signing bonus.

Until you walk into the recruiters office, you will have a no answer. The only way to make it a YES answer is to take a few steps and speak your mind.

Good luck.

it could be if you can take the discipline but of course if the army is prepared to accept you would be your hurdle

It can instill a lot of values, but it can also make a lot of angry people angrier. Also, in the US, it is very difficult to get into the military with a felony conviction, and in some cases it's non waiverable. If that's something you'd like to do, especially if you need to get out of the situation you're in (often the case with criminals, must return to crime because there's no other choice anymore), then I'd say give it a good shot. If you don't like it you can always get out and move away from where you came, and start over that way. Good luck to you, I'm glad you want to better yourself!

your never too old to join up and to be honest they would harvest the aggressive side and teach when and how to fight instead of just attacking, as long as your physically fit and have the right attitude to play the game during your training and not step in with an attitude of ive done bird then you would be ok just ask the recruitment nco about your position first to see if they can help but by all means fight and serve your country rather than just fighting.

LadyLynn
Yes! It'll straighten out your bad habits. Habits you may not even know you have. The Army will make you a real upstanding citizen, and a real gentleman. I say , "Go for it!!"

southernpride41380
I just went through the whole problem of the felony thing. I had to pay off all my restatution and court cost, get a back ground check of every state I lived in and had to have my lawyer go infront of a judge to get my probation dropped (which my probation officer had to agree was O.K.) It has alot to do with what you did. My recruiter said what I did wasn't a "violent" crime so it wasn't that bad. Like I've heardand seen; alot of rules have changed and as far as I have found out: It's all up to higher Archy on alot of it.

I wouldn't be able to say as I don't know many people who were in the army (apart from my godfather) or who got a criminal record. Saying getting on a bit, 23 doesn't seem that old, you've basically just left your teens. Maybe the others can help more.

I am sure they will consider you. All you can do is enquire and present your case.

why not?
you can always ask at your nearest Army Recruitment Centre.
i don't see that there'll b a problem, they need soldiers & can't really afford to turn people away.
remember that the Army is not what it used to be & no bullying or discrimination is allowed.
good luck dude, you go for it.
