No. How about a mandatory 4 year military service for every illegal alien wanting citizenship.

Being former military, I do not. The priveladge to serve our nation should only be of those who possess the sufficient amount of integrity and patriotism. It shouldn't be a requirement to prove your loyalty to our nation. However, there is a federal service requirement I do think should be implemented. It would require all men and women aged 18 to 25 to enlist in a state response brigade for a term of 3 years. Though they will not recieve actual military training, they will be required to attend courses in fields such as first aid, river rescue, flood, tornado, blizzard, hurricane, and earthquake response along with humanitarian assistance training. It would decrease response time to less than 30 minutes in some cases and also allow FEMA and a state's equivalent to FEMA to ensure a quick detailed response.

Until each person has a true feeling of military service, no one will ever understand how fortunate they actually are of being Americans.

Yes. For all the immigrants so they see what it takes to be an American and to show the folks who grateful it is to be an American. they will appreciate it more.

USA Proud

Being an American is a privilege, not a right, and therein holds certain responsibilities, one of which is military service, the other your civic duty. Why should some Americans enjoy the freedoms we have and contribute nothing? They are the same one who degrade and put down the same country they wouldn't leave if they re life depended on it. I cant stand those shameless cowards. To answer your question, yes, but it is a crying shame it has to be asked.

2 years YES. I have been a proponent of this policy for a long time, Israel does this and thats why no noe kills 30 students with one gun in a school, everyone has military training who is over 20 and tehy all have weapons.

The debate about gun control laws and safety of letting everyone have a gun would be solved if they all had military arms training.

No, I think it should be a personal decision. Not everyone is cut out for the military or wants to take that road. You should be allowed to go to collegeor work instead. Plus you have to think about the individuals with physical/mental handicaps. Besides if everyone conformed to the same lifestyle how boring would this world become.

I have been saying there should be a manadtory service for a while now. I wouldnt make it mandatory at 18, but rather you must serve two consecutive years between ages 18 and 28. I would also say that, those seeking citizenship should serve as well. the Military is a great resource for immigrants, they offer a steady paycheck, free medical, and most of all they will teach you english. I can agree that some people are not "cut out" for the infantry, I am one of those. Im not infantry material, I have the wrong mindset the wrong motivation, and a completly wrong attitude. However, with that said I have been in 5 years, and I just re-enlisted.

Mandatory service would promote a sense of pride in your country which many Americans have seemed to have lost since the 60's. We no longer value ourselves much less our country, I beleive that with mandatory service we would be able to once again, develop a stronger country, a country with citizens who are proud.

It would also give the right to be a war "protester" in my eyes. If all of your opinons are based on CNN's and Fox News coverage, plus tidbits from "Soldiers" I do not belive you should have the right to voice your opinion about the war. If you have never served, you know nothing not only about the military, but about war. Mandatory service would enlighten those who are blindly led by the media.

Of course, there are exceptions to the mandatory service. You must be competant and able bodied. Just because you are a geek doesnt mean your not able to do some pushups

only if it was for all people, and not just for the ones who father's could get them out of it! The way things work now I would never support such a thing, because you would have the privileged getting out of it at every turn. look at things now, our own president gets up and tells us he supports the war 100%, but yet neither of his two daughters are in the military, but my niece is going on her third tour of duty in Iraq,he supports your kids going off to war! as do most of the politicians that vote on such things!

Only in the National Guard or Coast Guard. I am 19. No way in hell should people be forced reek terror by commiting war crimes and murdering innocent people in a distant land.

No. I would, however, support a mandatory one- or two-year public service.

no. i don't think any one should have to serve or fight involuntarily. A countries people that will serve loyally shows a strong country, a country who forces people to fight needs to rethink their way of leading.

a big YES because yours and everyone elses freedom is not free. MANY Americans past and present have given the ultimate sacrifice to ensure you and I have it. It is time for everyone to give back to this great country especially our spoiled youth whom have grown up for the most part without values and knowing what it is to give. (Not everyone is spoiled, but there are a great majority of youth whom are) Not only does serving in the Armed forces teach values it also makes one proud to be an AMERICAN!

chesva58
Yes I would, but it should be 3 years with 3 in the inactive reserve.

No. I believe it would have many huge benefits for individuals and for our country. However, the principle our Constitution was based on is freedom. Forcing somebody to participate, even if it is for their own good, is oppression, not freedom. Stealing freedom, if only for 2 years, is still stealing freedom, and I believe that is a direct contradiction to everything our Constitution and country stand for.

That is also why I am against all social programs at the federal level. Because every tax payer is forced to participate with no alternative and no recourse. But that's a rant for another time.

Either you believe in freedom, or you don't.

navywife99
Yes maybe it would teach some of these people respect!!!!!! And how it feels to love your country the way the military men and women do today and in the past. And maybe you wouldn't take everyday for granted

andrew_is_mean
No and not because I wouldn't fight for my country but because the military is not a place for everyone some people need it some people want it but others who don't would just have a negative experience

Yes, I would! But only for 18 year old who have decided not to attend college. Also, the mandatory term would not include combat.

Not at all.

If someone voluntarily enters the service and dies for their country that is one thing.

If someone is forced to enter and dies in combat then the US is meerley a group of savage murderers.

Something like mandatory peace corp I would support, or red cross yes, but to be forced to go overseas and kill other people and at risk of your own life? No.

Not I won't...
Is not a good idea...
It should stay just like is now.
Because is better job done when a person volunteer for.

babygirl143_dk
no I think they should change the rules that no one can serve until they are 25 yrs of age. Studies say when people ages 18 to 24 come back from the war they have mental illness and dual dependency's on drugs and drink. I think its a shame that people so young are subject to such things.

No. Freedom and conscription are mutually exclusive terms.

If I was an american No - We Brits abandoned National Service years ago - being in the military should be your own choice.

Absolutely not. There is no need for it and no need for this country to pursue its current militaristic policies. Nor is it right to force people who don't support the wrong-headed policies of this administration (and that includes the overwhelming majority of Americans at this point) to go out and kill people for Bush's pleasure.
