They are doing a planned withdraw......and no its not as all they are doing consolidating at the air base....so going to be close basra |

Good, they should all just come home! |

Not really. It would look bad if they had to fight the 150,000 Mahdi army later on and pull out after. Thats the rub. |

good they go home , im happy for their families.
good why is it bad???? they tried so hard for iraqi ppl. thx to all of them. |

neither but being x forces myself i think we should've pulled out sooner. F**k bush & wot he thinks, we have 2 stand up 2 him. i feel that like in Northern Ireland we should just go & leave them (Iracis) 2 destroy themselves & not blame anyone else for their mess |

for f#cks sake they are not retreating!!! you fu#cking idiot, they are withdrawing to the airfield at shiba.
at least listen to the news properly, we are being brought back to the centrally held camp and returning the palace to the iraqi forces.
its cowards like you that take the great out of britian! |
|

Both good and bad! Less deaths for the british but can the iraqis keep peace? or will it all go to waste and the army having to try restore order once again. but overall if they just pulled out of iraq completly and let them resolve there own problem its a religious war which will probably never end were makeing it worse. and for the guy that said about northern ireland i live there and i think its a peaceful place now that theyve had the ceasefire they should do the same in iraq. |

Don't read into it too much. They are number one ally. |

The first sensible thing to have happened since Blair left office. Bring the rest home from Afghanistan. |

Neither.
Politicians sent them, and the US arrmy, in to destroy the physical superstructure and polity of Iraq. This has happened and they should now be withdrawn. If they leave Iraq without being overcome in battle by the Iraqi resistance or other armed factions then it will be a victory. What sort of victory Bush and Blair have achieved is another matter. |

There was no "Retreat" from Basrah Palace. It was planned as a fighting withdrawl, however, the militia didn't want to come out and fight.
We have forced them to the negotiating table, they have taken a serious amount of casulaties in comparrison to Brittish troops.
Over the last 4 months fighting in and around Basrah has been intense, and I have lost some good friends.
Maybe YOU should think of joining up and doing YOUR bit instead of being an armchair critic!!! |

bad.
I think it was a bad idea going to Iraq in the first place.
it's AL to do with oil and world domination it's nothing to do with weapons of mass distruction
life is too short for war and conflict, people only live once
if stuff like this continues, we will not have a world left. |

Why do you call it retreating I think you mean withdrawal......I do not understand why anyone has a problem with this it is NOT our country and now the training has been implemented they need to take control themselves.....We are going to assist if problems arise and our role is now to support the Iraq's in running their OWN country..... |

The soldiers are not retreating, but being displaced to the outskirts.
A British Ministry of Defense source in London said troops were pulling out of Basra Palace, which was built for Saddam Hussein, in the city centre and withdrawing to the vast British airbase on the outskirts of the city. One Reuters witness said he could see helicopters taking off and landing at the palace |

Francis F, you must read the news carefully. They are not retreating to the air field in Shiba, they are moving to the COB. Contingiency Operationg Base inside basra Airport. The shiba airfield is some five miles away.
It cannot be a retreat if they are moving to an equally dangerous base. The COB gets hit just as much as the palace. |

The troops are not interested in Blair's vanity. They know if Blair hadn't been such a George Bush brown nose then many of their comrades would still be with them. |

Its a war they cant win, just like they couldnt win in Northern Ireland.
Retreat now is good for the Army because less of our soldiers will die for a cause that was flawed from the start. |

neither, bush will keep our troops in Iraq until he is out of office. Not for the good of anybody but himself...almost 4000 dead and still counting... |

Looks bad, unless you consider that Iraq is not in the Home Counties and Iraqi's will not behave in the way most people expect them to. After decades of the dictatorship should we be surprised at the break up of Iraq, look at Yugoslavia after the death of Tito and learn the lesson. The British Army just made Basra a target rich environment for the insurgents who's only wish is to be top gangster. The Shia' and the Sunni's need to learn from the Kurds and stop fighting each other. |

i think it looks bad, any army leaving under attack from the people they were supposed to be liberating cannot be seen as a victory. |
