my army unit says that a fundraiser that they are having is mandatory. are they allowed to make me give up money if i dont want to.

No, you can anonymously call JAG and seek advice with out using names.
"The Joint Ethics Regulation, or JER, prohibits federal employees, including uniformed personnel, from directly or indirectly soliciting (asking for) gifts, prizes, awards and other benefits for themselves and for their organizations in an official capacity.
First, "in an official capacity" means being in uniform, or referring to your unit, organization, office, title or authority. Second, all fund-raising activities must be done in a personal capacity and during personal time. If you want to raise funds for your organization's holiday party, it should be done through your unit's private organization or unofficial activity (booster club, sunshine fund, etc). Federal personnel who are soliciting funds through their units' private organization or unofficial activity must still do so without referring to their office, title, position, or authority; and must not be in uniform."

They can mandate participating in the fundraiser, but cannot make you donate any money toward it. |

No. Fundraisers are voluntary. The only way they can take your money is by NJP or there was an error with your pay.
