the article was about australian troops that are serving overseas, are having to buy their own equipment like the camo shirt, because the pockets would not fit the specified number of magazines, or the bukles on the bag break easily, things like this, is this true, or just some bored jornalist making up stories.

While not a case of a bored journalist simply making something up, a lot of articles regarding the Defence Force are greatly exaggerated. Some soldiers buy moisture-wicking shirts with camouflaged sleeves to wear directly under body armour in the heat, but I've never known anyone buying their own camo shirt for the pockets - magazines are supposed to go in webbing, not uniform pockets.
Buying or modifying custom equipment in the Army is so commonplace, it's almost universal. Common custom-bought kit includes webbing, packs, sleeping gear, jackets, pouches and boots. In virtually all cases it's possible to make do with the standard-issue kit, but it's often not as comfortable or doesn't suit an individual soldier's needs. |

I've never seen a problem with uniforms.
Many soldiers choose to buy their own webbing mainly through personal preference.
If issued gear breaks it will be replaced. |
