if you already have a ship date, but dont want to ship until your security clearance is cleared?

my friend has a ship out date and is also awaiting approval for his S. clearance. The problem is that he has multiple criminal offenses (minor misdemeanors and drug possession charges) And doesn't want to go into the boot camp without knowing whether he is approved of not. He is young, 19, didn't have much jobs or changed locations, so how long would it take for them to make a decision about the clearance? also, if he gets denied would he have to be reassigned to any job? he's going in as an E-3 so a reduce in his rank as well? or can he decide to leave and try his luck at another branch with no adverse marks on his file?...

hey do not do your security clearance before you ship to basic.

If your AIT needs a security clearance, they will do a quick clearance check during basic and issue a temporary clearance for AIT.

But your real clearance investigation doesn't start until after you are in the service.

From what I have seen, no. He cannot wait.

They will not finish a security clearance until he is committed to go because they are expensive and they can take six months to go through. If there are no apparent issues with the clearance and it has not finished by the end of Basic Training, he will get a interim clearance for AIT. If there is a problem and he cannot get a interim clearance, he will stay at the Basic Training Company in an administrative job until it goes though.

A denied clearance should not reduce his rank, it will just mean that after Basic Training he will have to pick a new MOS. I had an E4 who was supposed to be Military Intel, his clearance got denied because his parents were international missionaries and his foreign travel could not be verified, so he re-classed to Combat Scout as an E4 still.

usually the interviewer at MEPS can tell if you will get one or not based on your background. the one in Phoenix told me he was right about 90% of the time. if he is honest then no he probably won't get one, and if he lies about his past and gets caught then he could be screwed then. best thing is to get in in an MOS that doesn't require one, get that past behind you, and move on.

Security clearances are not evan started until he compoletes basic training. So if he is waiting for a security clearance it's not comming. If his job requires one and he lied on his security questionaire I can guarentee he will not get one. His options will be to take asignment to a job that does not require a clearance or be seperated for fraudulentr enlistment.
