m4a1 vs m16a4? 10points!?

Well first up.
I would point out that more people then just the Marines us the M16A4, i have seen army units with them. [Not the whole units, select people in the units] And like wise i have seen Entire USArmy units with the M4A1.

And the only real answer is as you put it.
Different Mission.
If you clearing a house, the M4.
If you in a more open environment the M16.

Now that being said, i would take the M4A1 as a All Around weapon.
The reason being this.

Most Targets now engage you from a range of about 200m. [That if your "outside"]
I can hit a 300m Target with a M4 no problem, so 200m is all big bird/cookie monster easy.
Unless you trying to hit a target at 400-500m the M4 is just fine. Especially with the right optics package.

But if you get into a building the M16 is not going to magically get shorter.

So in short, Unless you are a ~Almost Sniper~ You really don't need the Extra range from the M16A4.

And to the guy above me.
Yes the AK is better.
If you happen to live in a mud puddle.
The only thing the AK has over the M16/M4 is Reliability.
If you clean your Rifle you don't have a problem.

And i speak from experience when i say this.
Even at 200m, a Insurgent with a AK is most likely not going to hit you unless he is just lucky. Literally the worst shot in our Company can nail a man sized target at 200m.

That is not a say the AK can not be a effective weapon, but the M16/M4 is more accurate and easier to handle.

And on another note.
You will learn in both Basic and in the Field.
That you will NEVER..... EVER.... EVER... Use the Burst/Auto-fire on a M16 or M4.
You will use it as a Semi-Automatic Weapon.
Why?
Because, you point shoot one round and then point and shoot another target. That's it, if you need Full Auto or Burst. Your doing something wrong.

the marine corps m16a1 or the seals m4a1?

you got things messed up my friend. the m4 is simply more compact, lighter, and has slightly less range than the m16. it also has automatic fire capability, where the m16 has burst.

and the m16 is not just for the usmc or the m4 for the seals.

marine and army combat mos's will be armed with the m4, unless on the saw. usually pogs rock the m16s. all the branches have the same firearms for the most part, no branch unique firearms.

sf and seals have more freedom to what they can carry. usually seals will carry something small and compact, like an mp5.

Essentially they are the same exact thing. The only real difference is the M16A4 is heavier and is Semi/Burst whereas the M4A1 is lighter with Semi/Auto. Neither one is better than the other. And both far outperform the ancient *** AK-47 the other poster mentioned.

Overall M16 is a better RIFLE overall.

M4's are shorter for portability and CQB. They suffer at long-range engagements.

Different weapons, different strengths and weaknesses.

U.S. Army Strong

The Marines carry M4A2's as does the Army. If Navy Seals are carrying an M4 it's an M4A2 as well. The Military doesnt use the fully auto M4A1. As for the M16A4 it's the same as an M16A2 except instead of a carrying handle and round heat gaurds it has a picatinny rail system. Now the difference Between the M4 and the M16 is slight, they fire the same round and have the same upper carrier/ bolt assembly type, however the M4 is not a rifle, it is a carbine which means the barrel is shorter where as the M16 has a rifle length barrel, also the M4 has an adjustable stock that can be adjusted to 4 positions. The barrel length only gives the M16 a negligable edge in max distance and the short barrel and adjustable stock make the M4 much better for Close Quarter Combat.

This is commment for ar-15 and ak-47 issues. If we talk about the training and organization of military unit. U.S. armed forces are far superior than other armed forces in the world. ESpecially the Special Forces. Thier organizational,training,and equipment. Look at the unit and LBE vest of every marines and army,they have all the neccessesary tools and equipment in a firefight. To the ammunition,gadget,first aid kit and etc. If for intance, our armed forces got into standing firefight with taliban in afganistan or insurgents in Iraq, with the same number. I Think our armed forces will likely win the battle because of thier organizational pattern. squad organization,platoon,and etc. Training,weapon, and equipments. Organizational make,weapon,equipments,and training combined all of this in our armed forces,that is why,our is superior armed forces. inferior forces do, hit and run,because they cannot stand a long firefight with ours. Becuase they knew,our forces will return will all their firepower. Becuase of the organization,weapons,equipments,and training of our armed forces-this make our armed forces,one of the best armed forces in the world. Organizational making of our arm forces makes _FORCE MULTIPLIER. Even in squad or platoon level -if every soldier had correct weapons, and had pre-plan designated task to do.When in come to contact they will surely win because they know how to react.

I'am not a military guy,but according to my research M16 is better than Ak 47. Let's go to the point why? 1. First the sight is nearer to the eyes than the Ak, so it is more accurate- to hit the target. 2. The recoil is much lesser than the Ak. 3. It is versatile enough that you can put various accessories according to mission. 4. If the average firefight (maximum) is 300 yards. then,the m4 is enough for that distance. You do not need M16 A2 or rifle barrel. Because of the riflescope i.e. trijicon ACOG you can hit the target at 300 yards with little practice, The bottom line is ----M16 rifles and carbines is better than AK 47. With the GPMG 7.62 and Saw and a Designated marsman with 14 with leoupold scope 10X and M203's of a squad or plaaton, this firepower of a squad or platoon is more than enough to suppress opposing enemy with the same numbers.Combined with thier trainings. So are the medic who can treat minor wound so that the soldier can fight again. --They can fight 2 x thier numbers - with help of firepower,training,cover and etc. radio who can contact reinforcement - if they are near need help or supply --I think they can last and long firefight and win a small battle. In unit they carry various weapons,equipments,and accessories according to the mission needs.
