"Serve" in the Army? (ROTC question)?

I'm looking at this scholarship section of the Army ROTC website, which says they'll pay for this and that blahblah but you have to serve in the Army for x amount of time... does that mean actual combat? or just being apart of it?
Additional Details
FYI : I'm not TAKING ADVANTAGE of the system or whatever. I'm not worried or scared or trying to get out of combat, I was simply confused and asking.

The Army ROTC program works likes this:
After graduating college and becoming a 2nd Lieutenant, you have 4 years active duty. After that you can either have 4 years in the Reserves, another 4 on active duty, national guard, or IRR which is Individual Ready Reserve (if your particular skills are needed then you will be contacted). OR you could serve 6 years on active duty and 2 years in the Reserves, National Guard, or IRR. Anyway you look at it the Army has you for at least 8 years. The ROTC is a great program especially since you not only get a college education but also become a 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation. However in terms of actual combat it depends upon what branches you decide you want to pursue (aviation, Corps of Engineers etc.), as well as your scores at LDAC. It can be kind of confusing but I would suggest contacting someone at your prospective/current college as they would be the most knowledgeable about this topic. I spent probably 5-10 hours just speaking with both students and faculty of the ROTC program before making my decision. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and ill do my best to help.

you will owe 4 years back to the army on active duty. Some of that time could be deployed to combat.

Just because you aren't in a combat MOS does not mean you will not end up in combat. POG's get mortared as well.

If you're going ROTC then you'll be an officer.

Just what we need, someone who just want to take advantage of the system....and an officer, no less.
