Hell yes i wear my seatbelt. I can't afford a ticket and I don't trust any of the idiots in my town...they're either old or college kids that don't know how to drive. would you drive around without your seatbelt with idiots around you? besides that I don't feel like going into a ditch on the higway if i blow a steer tire and going through the windshield. |

Ariel

Yes, first because its the law. If police see you with no seat belt on they will give you a ticket. Second because if your phone rings or something it might scare you and you might get in to an accident. Third because you can't trust other people on the road, they might cause you to get in to an accident, if you were wearing a seatbelt you wouldn't be in much injury. Fourth because why wouldn't you? It's comfy and you can't even notice that is on you. |

Yes,I must say that I always wear my seatbelt in the car. When I was young, I did not do so, but when I had children, I tried to be a good example. I firmly believe that more people live when they have an accident with a seat belt on than the ones who have accidents without a seatbelt.
Not only that, but I find that I actually feel that I have more control of my vehicle with a seat belt on. |

I'm too old to take unnecessary chances and not wearing a seatbelt is one of those. It's automatic, get in car, click seatbelt. I've also seen or heard of accidents where people didn't have a chance when not wearing a seatbelt. |

Yes,always.Biggest reason is I don't need to give the police one more excuse to randomly harass people, but having said that I have only been in one accident in the last 25 years and I believe the belt helped to keep me from being tossed about more than I was.Came out without a scratch. |

Not just because you are about 100 times more likely to survive a major accident and reduce injuries.
As a pilot in the Air Force, I experienced lateral and negative G forces in flight, and the seat harness would pinch and bruise while keeping me in the seat. I found that at the end of the day, while driving home, if my seat belt was just a little loose, I would move and slide in my seat during turns. It felt like I was loosing control. I would tighten up the belt to be more comfortable.
I can't even shift gears in the car now without the vibration of the transmission kicking in shifting me in my seat, forcing me to put my seatbelt on if I have forgotten it.
I know it is a wierd answer, but I am thankful for my AF experience. The safety procedures I learned are so deeply instilled that I don't have to think about them. I just do it. I hope this helps. |

I'm actually somewhat neurotic about it, my friends and family might tell you. To the point where I won't take the car out of Park until everyone in the car has their seatbelt on. This has, occasionally led to some conflict with a friend or two who don't wear their seatbelts. Sorry, not in my car. You want to risk your own life, that's your business. I'll be damned if any shred of the blame for your death is on my conscience, though.
Why? I don't think I can grasp that question. That's akin to asking "Why *don't* you play Russian Roulette?" For the life of me, I cannot grok why anyone wouldn't wear a seatbelt. It requires no time to put on or take off, it is not uncomfortable (unless, I suppose, you're insanely sensitive, maybe?), and it SAVES YOUR LIFE. There is really no question about that. Read any news report of any traffic accident, and the vast likelyhood of someone suffering serious injury or death is when they're not wearing the damn thing. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't.
I've heard one particularly stupid friend tell me "Well why should I wear it? I know I'm a good driver. I'm not going to get into an accident." This moron is apparently under the belief that there is no such thing as a no-fault collision. That a "good driver" will never be in an accident. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. For one, you've got the million other idiots on the road. And yes, I say "idiots", because that is what you should assume. Never assume another person behind the wheel of a two-ton death machine is as much a "good driver" as you are. Always assume they could kill you at any moment. For two, the unexpected happens, regardless of how good a driver everyone involved is. Brakes fail, animals run into the road, weather happens. There's just no way to be 100% sure you're going to survive every time you get into the car. |

Yes. Why? you ask... One well known name for you... Princess Diana. The only person who survived that crash was also the only person wearing a seatbelt. What a shame to have lost someone in a position to make a difference in our world all because of the mistake of not having put on her seatbelt.
I actually have a brother who refuses to wear a seatbelt and maintains that one of his buddies survived a serious car crash BECAUSE he was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle, thereby saving his life. This may be true. But these incidents are extremely rare. In fact, in fatal crashes, 75 percent of all passenger car occupants who were totally ejected were killed. Only 1 percent of those occupants had been using a safety belt. [NHTSA, Traffic Safety Facts Overview, 2001].
Here are some more facts for you:
Of the 31,910 vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2001, 60 percent were not wearing a safety belt. [The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Annual Assessment of Motor Vehicle Crashes, 2001]
Safety belts saved 13,274 lives in 2001, and if all vehicle occupants over age 4 had been wearing safety belts, 7,334 more lives could have been saved, NHTSA estimates. [NHTSA, Traffic Safety Facts Overview, 2001]
Each percentage-point increase in safety belt use represents 2.8 million more people buckling up, 250 more lives saved and 6,400 serious injuries prevented annually, NHTSA estimates. [NHTSA, FY2003 Performance Plan, 2002]
Seventy-three percent of the people who were in a fatal crash in 2001 and were restrained survived; of those who were not restrained, only 44 percent survived. [NHTSA, Annual Assessment of Motor Vehicle Crashes, 2001]

It is all about inertia and kinetic energy. If you understand anything about either of these work principles, then you would wear a seatbelt. Vehicles travel so fast these days, and if they suddenly stop moving, you must have a means to keep your body from continuing on at the same speed the vehicle had been traveling before the sudden stop. Your seatbelt is your means.
If 90 percent of Americans buckled up, we would prevent more than 5,500 deaths and 132,000 injuries annually. We all pay for these unbelted injured victims. Wear your seatbelt if only to not add to my taxes, healthcare and insurance costs please.
